One of our legal secretaries described an AUTO CORRECT problem she was having. When a word processor looked at the document, it appeared that she had the French AUTO CORRECT activated. With both of them playing with it, she eventually got it back to English.

The secretary said that the problem started when she copied a grammatical symbol into a new document, apparently leading to this whole interesting chain of events. The way the word processor said he understands it is that “all these various aspects have to match (if only I had one of those high-tech terms right now!!). You can’t just select Arabic or Cyrillic in your AUTO CORRECT guide and then type away. You need to have maybe four other features linked or nothing happens, including an entirely different language package and an attached dictionary.”

Our users do not have another language package on their computers. Does anyone have any ideas about how the secretary might have had a French AUTO CORRECT without another language package?

The standard US configuration for Word out of the box is to have proofing tools for French and Spanish. Unfortunately, the default in language is for “auto-detect language” to be enabled. If you search this forum, there are a couple of prior threads on this sarcasm nifty “feature.”

        Karen,
Thanks for the information. I’ve been searching the forum, but apparently am not looking for the right keyword(s). Any suggestion as to search phrase? Have tried “auto-detect language” and several others. Thank you.

Hi! I knew it was here… but it was in General Office… fortunately, I remembered that “French” was part of the subject. laugh
