AutoCad import ?

I have been an AutoCad user for over 15 years. Now, some of the “cheeses” have decided that using Visio would be better. The Visio is tied into a few other of our “office” programs (estimating, projection,etc)
Since I have many years of AutoCad drawings, I would like to import them into Visio if at all possible.
The AutoCad version is 14, The Visio version is currently 5.0.c (and will be switched to Visio 2002 shortly).
I know very little about Visio other than it can create Organizational charts and stuff. We are using the AutoCad for Mechanical and Electrical type of drawings (on 11×17).
Has anyone out there had experience in converting ?

In Visio 2000, you can *insert* an AutoCAD drawing into a Visio document, and I seem to recall that Visio 5 had the same feature, but it doesn’t sound like that’s what you want to do. Furthermore, if you have a later version of AutoCAD, Visio 5 may not recognize the drawing format unless you backsave the documents to an earlier format, if possible.

I’m using Visio2000 and under the open files dialog you can select .dwg format. It takes some adjustments on scaling and orientation on the page but seems to work fine for me. After opening the file, right click on the screen and select “convert” from the “CAD Object” menu. Not sure how the final result compares with working in AutoCAD, all I use is Visio.
