I’m setting up a new PC for one of my users this morning. It will have Office XP; she is currently running Office 2000. She would like all of the “auto-text” that she has setup in Word to be transferred to the new computer. Does anyone know where that file is stored, or an easy trick for transferring it?

AskWoody LoungerJuly 22, 2002 at 1:42 pm #602819AutoText entries are stored in templates. The entries that are available in all documents are most likely to be stored in Normal.dot.
Copy the user’s Normal.dot to a diskette or to a network folder. Then, on the new machine, use the Organizer in Word (Format/Organizer…) to transfer the AutoText entries from the copied (Word 2000) Normal.dot to the new (Word XP) Normal.dot.
“Global” AutoText entries can also be stored in glabal templates. AutoText entries stored in other templates are available only in documents based on that template.

AskWoody LoungerJuly 22, 2002 at 2:13 pm #602828Don’t bother with the organizer. Copy the Normal.dot form the old computer and replace the existing Normal.dot on the new computer with the one from the old computer. Also you may want to copy over her old AutoCorrect file to to save her having to rebuild that one. Look for the MOS*.acl file. The * will be a number which corresponds to the language US English is 1033. When you find it look for the file with the most current date. Copy that to the appropriate location on the new machine. This comes from an article I found on the http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/ site. Sorry not sure exact location. Title is How can I import and export all my AutoCorrect entries, so they can be transferred to another machine?
Hope this helps. Fay

AskWoody LoungerJuly 22, 2002 at 2:27 pm #602831It might be a good idea *not* to copy Normal.dot to a new machine, but start with a fresh one, and just transfer those settings you need. In my experience, Normal.dot can accumulate all kinds of garbage over time.
Another useful link: post 5112 by Phil Rabichow points to two methods to save and restoresettings.

AskWoody LoungerJuly 23, 2002 at 9:43 am #603054This was of some interest to me as I am just about to transfer to a new machine from a box with Windows 95 and 10GB to a new one with Windows XP and 80GB but I am sticking with Office 2000 til I have got used to things. The page refered to for the Save My Settings Wizard has changed (to http://office.microsoft.com/Downloads/2000/o2ksmsdd.aspx )
It downloaded fine and all appeared well until I had to type in my email address and a password. An error message informed my that I had typed my email address incorrectly (I hadn’t) over on the KB MS acknowledge that this is a problem caused by having a dash in my email address and it’s resolution/workaround to this is to enter an email address without a dash!! Not hugely helpful as all my mail comes to my hill-cross domain!

AskWoody LoungerJuly 23, 2002 at 1:05 pm #603123I have to reinforce what Hans said about not just copying the normal.dot. When my firm migrated from Word 6 to Word 2000, we copied normal.dots for our users and it has caused all kinds of headaches. Renaming the normal.dot and copying entries via the organizer, although a longer process, is definitely safer.
