I used paypal to subscribe, but I only found and auto-payment option which I most certainly do NOT want. How do I cancel auto-payment??

For some reason, when you put a payment through PayPal, the PayPal routines set you up for a recurring donation, make the transfer, then dismantle the recurring donation.

There’s a setting that’s supposed to override the behavior, and I’ve tried multiple times, but it just doesn’t seem to like me.

I donated on 12/22/18 and PayPal didn’t say anything about recurring donations. Is this just recent PayPal donations??

Yes, this is related to the new Plus model, and has only applied for the last few days. 🙂

The automatic renewal is supposed to be turned off, and I think in your case it was. Could you check your PayPal account and let me know?

There’s some strange settings for PayPal in our renewal software that have me baffled. I’m trying to find a definitive answer…

I have found that Paypal allows certain websites to auto-pull payments from your Paypal account whether you okay it or not. I believe Google Play Store is one such website. You then have to go into Paypal and delete the authorization that you supposedly granted that website to pull payments from Paypal.

For me this is an issue because I have two-factor authentication set up in Paypal – whenever I log on to Paypal, it sends a code to my cell phone, which I must then enter in order to be able to log in to Paypal. These websites that I speak of somehow are able to bypass the two factor authorization and pull payments. (I believe Ebay sometimes bypasses two factor authorization.) To stop that, I have to log into Paypal and delete the authorization that that company somehow got Paypal to put into my account.

I say somehow, because Google (and whoever else) probably had my agreement to their pulling payments buried deeply somewhere, and I unknowingly agreed to it. Google buries this stuff so deeply that not even the best lawyer can figure it out.

I just encountered the same thing with PayPal.  While I want to contribute, I don’t want to do it with recurring annual charges so I canceled the transaction.  Anyway around this as I do want to donate!

PayPal and the AskWoody ordering system (WooCommerce) have a weird relationship.

When you buy something from PayPal using WooCommerce, PayPal sets up an automatic payment, pays the bill, then immediately discontinues the automatic payment. It makes no sense, but that’s how it works.

If you check your PayPal account, there won’t be a recurring payment.

I receive email notifications each time the auto payment is set up, when the account is charged, and when auto payment is turned off. I tried to look up the “Auto payment off” emails for you and CADesertRat, but couldn’t find the records (either for the charge or the cancellation) based on your names.

I apologize. I’m seriously thinking about dropping PayPal support for just this reason!

The credit card entry that has been invoked to accept payment works fine.

Please don’t.  I love that I don’t have to give vendors my credit card directly.

Go into settings, payments, manage automatic payments

        https://www.paypal.com/myaccount/autopay/

If the amount is inactive, you won’t get billed again.   If it’s set to automatic then I go to the manage autopayments screen and disable it

        https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_manage-paylist

I click on the specific item and cancel it.  This doesn’t cancel the payment, just the renewal.

Mine says Askwoody is “expired” so it wouldn’t auto renew.

I don’t remember how where I setup my auto-pay and now I can’t find the place to edit my info, see when to expect my expiration, make sure my auto pay is in fact canceled, etc. Any help will be much appreciated.

        thanks!

After visiting parts of PP I had never been before I can confirm that the payment I made was setup as automatic but was listed as Inactive.
Also setup 2FA so maybe not a bad thing 😉

Sometimes 2FA is allowed to be bypassed in Paypal. Anytime you make a payment through Paypal, you need to go into your Paypal account and make sure that 2FA is set up and active for everyone, and that there are no undesired recurring payments set up.

If you have posted before (other than the one #310664 immediately above), were you using the same User Name? If you are using a different user name, it would be a separate account.

Since the other post had not been published when you wrote this one, both had to be moderated. You should have no more trouble with immediate posting.

Incidentally, the Plus badge on your avatar shows you are already an AskWoody Plus member.

      +1

I paid by PayPal and it set up auto payments, then 2 minutes later another PayPal email came that the annual auto payment had been cancelled. I checked my PP account and there are no auto-payments scheduled.

With the AskWoody Newsletter, you have to renew annually.
But the only way to set it up is with recurring payments, then cancel the “recurring” part so you won’t get charged more than the initial payment.
That way, AskWoody keeps up with your subscription, not PayPal.
