I know this has been discussed before, but I can’t find the thread. I’m working on a file that someone has given me – a former Word perfect document. Everything is formatted as Level 1, Level 2, etc. not Heading 1, Heading 2. There is automatic numbering that I’d like to preserve, but it’s doing some very strange things. Even when I go back and redefine the style, sometimes the number format changes and I can’t change it back.

It’s a large document, so it would be a pain to unformat everything and start over. I’d appreciate another suggestion.

Can you define ‘strange things?! confused

        I’m sorry I wasn’t more specific.

Sometimes the indent for Level 1 increases from 0 to 0.75. When I click on the decrease indent button, level 1 and Level 2 reverse their indentation. For example

________Level 1 here (Ignore the leading ___ That’s to show the indent).
        Level 2 here.

Then when I go to Format styles to try and fix everything. I can’t get it to undo. I’ve tried using the paragraph formatting, the number customize formatting and it won’t change. Sometimes if I reboot, I can get things back to what I want. What I want is no indent for Level 1, or

        Level 1 here.
        _________Level 2 here.

If Level 1 and Level 2 are style names, you could use find and replace to replace them with the corresponding (desired) Heading 1 (etc.) styles. I tested this with both the find and replace boxes blank, but with styles assigned using the Format drop-down button.

Of course. I should have thought of that. I’ve had to do it for several other things before. Thanks so much.

Sorry to jump in late. As soon as you say former WordPerfect document, I think all bets are off regarding cooperative formatting. Presumably Level 1, etc., is a converted WP style and as has already been suggested, it should be replaced with a Word numbered style. Actually, the entire document should be in proper Word formatting, which may or may not be the case depending on how it was converted (just for starters, if you check Tools | Options | Compatibility, does the Recommend Options field say “WordPerfect …”? It shouldn’t, unless you intend to send the doc back to WP).

I also wondered if when you alluded to adjusting the indentation on the style (assuming the numbering was set as part of the style and not manual) if you were modifying it as part of the Paragraph attribute (Style | Modify | Format | Paragraph). On numbered styles, the indentation should be altered as part of the Numbering attribute (Style | Modify | Format | Numbering | Customize); I don’t know why, but changing the indentation there will affect what shows on the Paragraph setup, but it doesn’t always work the other way around. Anyway, it’s possible that if you changed it from Paragraph, or just changed it the shortcut way (making the change manually and highlighting the style name and hitting Return), there could have been a disparity between what the Paragraph and the Numbering thought the indentation should be. Just a thought.
