Yes, I do know that we should be using styles with autonumbering in our law firm. Yes, I know it’s best practice. Yes, I agree. But, the fact is, we don’t – for a whole variety of reasons – use styles. So, we have an attorney who has come up with a rather convoluted scheme for including his autonumbering in the TOC by using cross referencing within the mark for TOC fields. The actual field codes for a couple of his paragraphs look like this (the -> represents a tab):

The process is: After marking for Table of Contents (TOC), a Cross-reference (C-R) is inserted referencing the Paragraph number which was produced by Auto Numbering, in the first case
