I do a lot of digital audio work on my home machine (Dell Dimension 700); & when operating sequencing & audio editing applications, I have all my backgound apps, virus scans, screensaver, etc. turned off for optimum performance. I have tried to set up a separate hardware configuration in windows (98SE) to boot to that environment when I want to work with audio, but it seems to bypass task manager, task scheduler, display properties, etc. Is there another way to switch back & forth between setup configurations other than using hardware config or just manually closing all background apps? Thanks.

    Sincerely,

Unfortunately, Windows 98, unlike Windows 2000 or XP, lacks a capability of different settings for different users. If you can allocate around 2 GB of your hard drive AND you have a partitioning program like Partition Magic, you can establish dual-boot configuration for different profiles.

        kaplinb,

98SE has “user profiles”. Is that it?

No, it is not but you can try it – I know only security side of profiles in Windows 95/98 and NT/2000 – there are different.
