ATI I/O communications processor SMBus controller
No drivers are installed for this device
    What is this for?
    Are the drivers needed?
If so, where do I find them?

    Windows Update sent me this:
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc driver update for AMD SMBus
    Download size: 30 KB
You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.
    Update type: Important
This driver was provided by Advanced Micro Devices, Inc for support of AMD SMBus
    More information:

Should I install the WU or tried to find it at AMD?
I tried to find it on HP’s website but cannot find it.

    HP G62 407DX
Graphics Chipset:  AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250

    Any Help Appreciated,

It is generally better to download the drivers from the OEM or device manufacturer than from Windows Update. Since you did not fine them on the HP site, I would check AMD.
If you need more information about your hardware, check the Device Manager in the Control Panel, or run “msinfo32” (without quotes).

Not sure why you would be receiving a driver update for SM Bus Controller.

If I look under Device Manager on my Intel system (View > devices by connection), I find an SM Bus Controller under system devices, that is part of the PCI Express Root complex.

I also see there that “No drivers are installed for this device. “

Would the SMBus drivers be in the Graphics Drivers package or are they in the Chipset Divers package?

The AMD SMBus for my computer also shows that no driver is required, but I do not have your (8-Series) AMD 880G chipset. I also cannot get AMD driver selector to work although there appears to be drivers available for Windows XP to 10.

Peripherals (for example touch pads) can be made to communicate over that bus to provide a interface. If you are are to get the driver selector to work maybe AMD might have listed the reason for the update.

      Do you need it? Maybe…

I’ve learned the hard way, sometimes if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

What do mean by “AMD driver selector”, The driver selector on their website ?

I agree,  It is nearing that stage.

Yes, the manual driver selection menus on AMD’s support area of their site, sorry for the confusion.
