Yes, it’s just “moving house”, not changing the house itself!

      Susan,
As part of the upgrade/transfer process, would it be possible to move threads now under the general “Windows 10” forum to the (more logical) “Win 10 Questions” subforum??

Moving forums isn’t something that’s involved in changing the site’s host.

However, if there is a particular topic that isn’t in the correct forum, we can do that normally. It seems you are suggesting the generic Win10 Questions topic should host the Win10 version topics? That generic topic is for questions that don’t relate to a particular OS sub-version, so that wouldn’t seem a good idea.
        🙂

      Kirsty,

I respectfully disagree; “Questions Windows 10” should be the section for Win 10 issues that don’t involve a particular sub-version (build). Having also a section under the main “Windows 10 Forum” heading is both duplicative and confusing. FWIW, I didn’t notice the topics under the main Windows 10 Forum until after a year of expecting them all to be in the “Questions Windows 10” sub-forum. (?Who scrolls down that far??)

If this is unclear, we can discuss it further, but from past discussions, I believe Woody agrees with me on this point. I can’t find that (fairly recent) dialogue, but he said it was part of the general Forum reorganization that was upcoming. ??Maybe a vote in the Forum??

        Kirsty,

I found it – it was in a PM, so didn’t appear in the list of my postings.

“Good question – and point well taken. We’re going to be changing all of it shortly.”

I also find the organization of the web site confusing. Also counter intuitive, and not just the forums. Not to beat that poor dead horse again but the WS forum was so elegant and intuitive I am perhaps predisposed to find fault here.
That is why I hardly ever go to the forum lists, I just go to the “new posts since last visit’ bookmark and load any posts I wish to see. I find that since every once in a while something may happen to my browser I must save each page offered as if one leaves the “new posts since last visit’ link will say ” nothing new here” or some thing to that affect. It seems as if there is a daily token that determines when new links under “new posts since last visit” will be offered.

        🍻

Just because you don't know where you are going doesn't mean any road will get you there.

No – I’m suggesting that the generic Win 10 Questions topic should host the “Win 10 – not otherwise specified”  questions, rather than sticking them at the bottom, under all the Version subtopics.

      Okay.

I’m thinking of having an elaborate dinner. Practice for Christmas.

I’ll start cooking at 7:00 pm sharp.

Thanks for the warning but I’m old-fashioned (and old and pedantic).  It’ll be 12 noon in Chicago when the server move occurs: to me 12:00 pm (as well as 12:00 am) is meaningless, ungrammatical and confusing.  Of course the UTC reference clarifies the issue but such a reference would be unnecessary if the traditional usage was followed.

In my experience, DNS propagation tends to take longer than a few hours: more like a whole day or more. So I’ll expect for it not to work at all tomorrow.

Not much anymore. And there are things you can due to speed it up meaning almost no downtime.

thanks, I think. GMT is soooo much easier to understand and I prefer the 24 hour system.

Remember that the dash in UTC-8 is NOT a dash, it’s a minus sign!

So add 8 to Susan’s time and replace UTC by GMT and you get that time in Greenwich, London which is 18:00 GMT, also 18:00 Zulu Time, or 19:00 my time.

So, 1:00 PM Eastern US Time, until (whenever it shows up again).

Are we going to get an email AskWoody Alert when it appears all is up and running again?

Such a major change just a couple of days before Christmas seems an odd choice to make. Not a lot of time to work out any glitches before everyone at the new hoster breaks for the holiday.

      • #2321978

Changing hosts is a relatively simple process and the issues will have been sorted before the changeover is made.

I’m asking to relocate the questions (no capital) in the lower part of the Windows 10 Forum page to the “Questions Win 10” subforum, since these are questions about Windows 10 of no particular version.

Oh, that does get done, when we’ve got spare time – not something we get on a regular basis (spare time is fairly rare, actually).
It would help if people posted their questions in the right question topic, not in the windows forum! You know, like da rules…
        😉

        • #2322110

          Kirsty,

You know the ins & outs better that I do, but it shouldn’t take THAT much time to move 240 topics into a subforum with 3832 topics.

BTW, I hope the change to a new server/host will speed up the time to login to the Windows 10 Forum.
