I would like to rid my desk top icons of the small arrows in the lower left corner of them. I have tried downloading TweakUI to use it to do this but every time I try to download TweakUi and try to open it with either WinZip or Power Zip all I get are four items that do not allow me to open the Tweak program. The four items that I get are
C:WindowsTemp. —— 6kb CNT File,
C:WindowsTemp. —— 105kb Control Panel extension,
C:WindowsTemp.——- 51kb Help File,
C:WindowsTemp. —— 3kb Setup Information.
None of them allow me to open a program to use. I must be doing something wrong with the zip programs that I am not aware of. I have used both of the zip programs I have in the past with great results but for some reason when it comes to TweakUI, I have problems. Is there another program out there that can help me rid my icons of that little arrow that does not need a zip program. Please reply.

You have all you need, but the installation is less than obvious. Right-click on tweakui.inf and select Install from the context menu.

You can also try out Stardock’s excellent IconPackager, which does this and much, much more. You may never look at your icons the same way again!

I do not get any thing that states TweakUI.inf. Where is the site your are talking about that will allow me to get TweakUI.inf. I have gone to at least 15 different sites to try to get this program and get the same four items that I stated in my original post. As I said, none of them give me TweakUI. Every time I right or left click on any of the four items that I posted I get notepad pages or the window to unzip. You can’t get a program from them. Can you explain in more detail what you are talking about.. Also when I try to unzip TweakUi I get a window telling me that it could not find WinZip on my system. That can’t be. The program is there and it is working. I know because I can download other zip programs with no problems. Is there another program out there other than TweakUI.

The setup information file, when extracted, will be tweakui.inf. You have to right-click on this file once you have extracted the contents of the zip file and choose the install option. There is no program associated with this version of TweakUI. For more information on installing it, see Microsoft article 190643.

If you are having problems with WinZip, I would suggest removing and reinstalling it to correct any problems.

There are several “tweak” managers floating about. X-Setup is one such, and there are many more.

Try this link from the bottom of the MSKB Mark linked you to. I assume you’re working with Tweak UI 1.33 for 98–this is the latest version.

Download Tweak UI 1.33 Latest Version for Win 98 If you don’t get the right click Mark has shown you, I think you should reinstall Winzip or any other zip application you choose. Winzip is up to Beta 9 now I believe.

You can also use many many tweakers to remove those arrows, but I understand you still want Tweak UI in and it is always worth having. I have 1.33 and Tweak XP’s 2.0.1 and both run fine together. Most of the powertoys from Tweak UI for 95 that were individual will also run with all versions forward including XP with a couple modifications that are available here:

MS Windows Power Toys at Tech Trax

Tweak XP Trial will do this and much more and you get 50 free instances of it. I have it; it’s worthwhile.

Tweak Manager 2.1 for Windows from Winguides will do this and has a free trial and about 1000 Tweaks and grows every week.

As to removing the shortcut arrows, you can also do this easily in the registry with a couple simple regedits. All these tweakers are just gui interfaces that do regedits or run VB scripts. This regedit is from an XP site but it will work for all Windows 95 up:

Ed. SMBP: I know you have 98 but I took this into consideration. The regedit will work for any Windows version; the Tweakers’ also use this regedit and for that particular and probably many other tweaks they will work for 98 in trial for. I have not tried backwards compatibility with Tweak UI XP for 98–I suspect it works but don’t know. I do know that nearly every 95 Powertoy despite Microsoft’s stern warnings to the contrary they won’t work in XP and Tweak UI 1.33 for 98 through NT will work and coexist with Tweak UI XP because I run them both.

Thank you SMBP I tried using Tweak Xp Trial but could not find the file inkfile in my registry. I have even tried the TweakUi method and I cannot get rid of those little arrows. Could it be that I am taking the shortcuts from my favorites list and installing them on my desk top? Thats how I create my shortcuts.

However you create your shortcuts, there has got to be a registry setting that dictates they are gonig to default to that little arrow. BTW, some people over look a very simple timesaver that you can make and drag shortcuts from webpages by just dragging that “little e” from the top of the IE namebar, when you are using IE as your browser. Go on and try the Winguides Tweak Manager, or Mark’s suggestion of X-Setup or Stardocks’ Icon Packager. Most people who try Stardocks’ array of products and skins and there are just endless websites people have for modfications of Stardocks’ products really like the color and variation they can give to the gui of your OS/browser and their components and menus.

Look carefully in the registry and you may try Find. I am not on a Windows 98 machine, but I feel certain there should be the same subkeys. Maybe one of the 98 users can help out here to verify this.
