At our business, we have one Outlook calendar for all of a department, which is limited
to what is placed within the calendar. We use it just for major things, like whole days of
vacation or whole days at a client site.

We also use individual Outlook calendars to track our detailed schedules–appointments
    and things like that.

I know we can publish our individual calendars to each other, with various
degrees of control (read only, full edit rights, and so on). What I’m
wondering is whether we can automatically designate a category of items that
we want to have published in both our individual calendars and the department
calendar. That would be for those whole-day things, like vacation and
    business travel.

Thank you for your assistance. Fay

I know that this isn’t exactly what you are looking for, but it’s what I do when I need info published to 2 calendars. I create a new calendar item (all day event) on the group calendar, then use invite attendees to invite myself to the event. Immediately, a message pops up asking if I want to put the event on my calendar. It works if you add the calendar item to your own calendar first, but it goes through more steps that way.
