I have not found an example of this problem in my research, but it happens every time that I try to open files that I created with a previous version of MS Publisher (2000). I am using Publisher 2003, in the trial version. When I try to open my older files to revise, or even to view them, the application crashes and wants to send a “phone home” error report. It does not matter if I open it from within Publisher or if I double click from Windows explorer. The same thing happens, with the exception that, with the later method, Publisher restarts in Safe Mode.

    Any Ideas… Anyone?

    Thanks in advance,
    John D

      John,
I realize that this is an old question and you may have found the answer by now, but if not, might this be the problem? Or is it possible that the trial period has ended and Publisher has gone into a reduced functionality mode?

        Hello John,

Thank you for your post. No, this is not the problem, that is for sure. The size of the files was well below the memory limitations, and the symptom was that the application would crash, generating the MS Phone-home dialog box. My laptop came with the trial version of the Small Business package, and I had to uninstall it to put the full blown version in place. The trial period had definitely not expired when I was trying this. After installing a fully licensed version, the files opened without a problem. I assume it had to do with the trial version, but I am not sure. If it had been just with certain kinds of files that would be one thing, but this behavior was with every file that I tried. I assume that MS tested this scenario, so I was very surprised by it.

I am still learning about task panes and how they work, but the program seems to be functioning now.

Again, thanks for the reply. I was wondering if there was anybody out there…

Glad you got the problem solved. Answers (or suggestions) don’t usually take this long to post, but I guess in this case, nobody had any thoughts to offer. In any event, don’t be shy to post back if you have any further questions.
