Thanks to jscher2000, I set up my appletalk printer under Win 2000. Now I’ve upgraded to XP and the printer doesn’t work again.

Here’s the MS Knowledgebase article that I used to connect the printer under 2000. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?…B;EN-US;Q268599

I try to do the same thing for XP. When I get to 5. which says “In the Select Network Protocol dialog box, click AppleTalk Protocol, and then click OK. Click Close. ”

There is no AppleTalk Protocol to select. Where do I get the Apple talk Protocol? Is it supposed to be there already. I vaguely recall downloading something, but I don’t remember where I it was from.

    Help is much appreciated.

      Hmmm, this is not promising:

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 305989 – The AppleTalk Protocol Is Not Available in Windows XP

If the suggestions in the article don’t help, you might appeal to Apple. They’ve probably heard about this and have their own suggestions.

Thanks for the response. How did you find this article? I searched the Knowledge Base using XP and appletalk and couldn’t find anything relevant. I never seem to find the right article at MS.

I plan to contact the 3rd party vendor PC MACLAN by Miramar Systems. Then I’ll contact apple.

Sometimes I think I should never ever upgrade. What a hassle. Acrobat doesn’t seem to play well with XP either, but that’s for another forum. Just venting now.

Ah that good old Knowledge Base search engine. Not quite useless. But you’re right – it often misses articles that seem to be clear matches for a search. Google has a better search engine, and you can restrict any google search to the MS Support site by adding the following to your search:

          site:support.microsoft.com

(Note, no space between site: and the URL.) So to find articles about AppleTalk and Windows XP at MS support site, you can search on Google with:

          AppleTalk Windows XP site:support.microsoft.com

and you’ll see the article in question listed. This won’t get the very latest KB articles, but it’s often more productive than using the MS KB search.

And while you’re at google, try the search (minus the site:xxx restriction) from the groups page. You’ll get newsgroup articles telling you how others in the same situation are coping.

Just another update, Apple themselves is trying to do away with Appletalk with OS X. Unfortunely, until they fix SMB browsing (which was supposed to be fixed in Jaguar) it’ll be around for a short time.
