Typically this will be done online and over the air to a cloud backup.

Preferably to a local storage device.

      * Never trust the cloud. Trust what you control.

Too many don’t backup with a cable to a computer. I just want a backup- in the Apple world a cloud backup works just fine.

Susan, I don’t follow exactly what you’re saying here…are you suggesting there is no need to backup an iPhone to a Mac via Finder, just use iCloud backups? I do both. Thank you.

        Always backup.

Where you backup is up to you.

        cheers, Paul

I once had a friend who backed up to his computer, never to the cloud.  When the iphone broke, we found out that the backup to the computer was a year old.

Needless to say he lost stuff.  A lot of stuff.

If you are a person who does not use a computer on a daily basis, a cloud backup would be preferable.

Thank you.  I’m very committed to daily auto iCloud backups and weekly updates to the Mac for the iPhone.  As for the Mac, I do weekly backups to Time Machine or more often if I know files or settings have changed enough to warrant a new backup. I keep the Documents and Pictures on an external drive with weekly updates as well.

I’m sorry, Susan, but I’m going to have to disagree with your opinion, even though I wholeheartedly agree with your stance of needing to take backups of iDevices.

You made no mention of potential downsides…

In my experience, backup/restore of an iDevice to local storage is far quicker and more reliable, thus preferable to iCloud… unless you have:

      a) A rock-solid, guaranteed, always-on high-speed internet connection on your iDevice;

      b) A paid-for iCloud subscription… because the default free iCloud entitlement doesn’t appear to have increased a single GB in all the years I’ve had iDevices with ever-increasing capacities.

Even if you don’t use a computer on a daily basis, IMO it’s just common sense to take a local backup using iTunes (installed directly from Apple, not from the MS Store) before installing an iDevice update.

I note also no mention of the cost of doing any iCloud backup/restores via a paid cellphone/mobile data plan vs any available free wifi (and mindful of data connection speed)… something else that needs to be considered given the size of data transfers.

(I use iCloud solely for Contacts, Notes, Drive and Passwords for automatic storage and syncing between iDevices. I still haven’t used even 1GB of my default 5GB iCloud entitlement after nearly a decade… whilst my iDevice backups on local storage have grown exponentially in the same time. I probably couldn’t even do a complete backup of my iPhone these days to iCloud without paying for a subscription. Maybe it’s just me… but I just don’t see the need for a paid-for subscription to iCloud for device backups when I have oodles <a technical term> of local storage space.)

whilst my iDevice backups on local storage have grown exponentially in the same time.

I think it’s only fair to point out that I’ve realised today that this statement is completely wrong, because I have changed my backup strategy over the last couple of years.

I regularly move my photos/videos off from my iPhone to store elsewhere (a shared Google drive that my family has access to). As a result, any ‘Photo/Video’ data is rarely included in any of my iPhone backups.

I’ve just updated my iPhone SE2 128GB to iOS 18.4.1… and backed it up locally beforehand as per usual.

A quick check of the backup’s folder size shows today’s backup (with 251 photos still onboard) is 4.97 GB (5,346,086,799 bytes).

However, my earliest still-stored backup of this same device (on 2023-05-20) shows it was 19.5 GB (21,002,302,020 bytes)… much, much bigger in fact. (I’m just about to delete this backup [and others from 2023] to reclaim storage space.)

So, there’s no way back in May 2023 that I could have backed my iPhone up to iCloud (let alone my iPad as well) without paying for an iCloud subscription.

The situation is even more noticeable with my iPad. Since the sad expiration of my iPad Mini 2 years ago (and not being able to justify the cost of a replacement), I’ve come to rely on my iPad for my ebook storage (for when I’m sat waiting in GP surgery, barber, etc. It comes with me almost everywhere, often tethered to my iPhone‘s hotspot for internet access). It’s a 256 GB model (238.41 GB after initial setup) with 193.28 GB still free… so, about 45 GB used. Again, I would have no option but to purchase a subscription to backup to iCloud… which admittedly is fairly cheap but, IMO, an unnecessary expense if, as in my case, bucketloads (similar to oodles) of even cheaper (per GB) local storage is available. (I bought several factory-refurbed WD My Passport 1TB drives very cheaply direct from Western Digital many years ago. One failed after I dropped it (well, duh!), the others soldier on, year after year.)

If anyone is interested, using iTunes for Windows (from Apple, not the Windows Store) the default filepath for backups is:

      C:\Users\<your_username>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\<device_GUID>

      Hope this helps…

Apple sued for $5M for not recovering data after iPhone theft

A Minnesota man is suing Apple for failing to do enough after having his iPhone stolen, demanding access to 2 terabytes of data and at least $5 million in damages…

After his iPhone was stolen by pickpockets in Scottsdale, Arizona, Mathews claims he lost access to his photos, music, tax returns, and work-related research. As a consequence, his tech consulting firm apparently had to shut down.

In the suit, Mathews wants access to approximately 2 terabytes of data that forms his “entire digital life, including that of his family,” and at least $5 million in damages…

Mathews’ problems all focus around the Recovery Key, a feature of Advanced Data Protection which is used to reset the password and recover the account. It is a 28-digit key that Apple recommends users store safely for future use…

Without ADP, it is possible to recover accounts, in part because of the way Apple deals with encrypted data stored on its servers. Apple itself has a copy of encryption keys between the user’s device and iCloud, and they can be recovered easily, just not under ADP.

      * The owner of the stolen iPhone claim to be tech consultant yet he hasn’t created a local backup of his data ?
