Just an interesting side effect of apple updating.  First of the week someone in my office installed the earlier updates.  Was receiving Apple based text messages but not phone number based text messaging. So he couldn’t log into a couple of apps that relied on text messages to a phone.  We discovered that if you went into settings, scroll down to phone, there was no phone number registered.  We hard shut off the phone and rebooted it and then all of a sudden the text messages came in.

Always remember to hard shut down your phones on a regular basis especially when they start misbehaving.

No update available for ios 16.  It still annoys me that apple delays security updates for 16.x

What to do when iPad/Software update does not offer an update to the latest?

What to do when iPad/Software update does not offer an update to the latest?

Nothing, or upgrade to device that support the latest OS.

      * Just upgraded from iPad Pro 10.5″ to iPad Pro M2 11″

    • #2607493

      I have Model # MP2G2LL/A iPad Pro A1673 9.7″ wifi only Model # A1822. (5th generation).

So you are saying that I won’t get any OS upgrades after 16.7.2 ?

Looks like my ipad does not get IOS17 based on this:  https://support.apple.com/guide/ipad/models-compatible-with-ipados-17-ipad213a25b2/ipados

Your iPad cannot be updated to iPadOS 17. You need one of these models.

iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2nd generation and later)

      • iPad Pro 10.5-inch
      • iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation and later)
      • iPad Air (3rd generation and later)
      • iPad (6th generation and later)
      • iPad mini (5th generation and later)

Is that a security risk or is IOS 17 just a bunch of bells and whistles? If it’s a security risk, any recommendation for an iPad upgrade?

      • #2607495

Any un-updated OS is a security risk, yet people still using Windows XP, 7, 8.1..
        Or iPhone 8..
In this case common sense rules with everything online if users are content with what they have.

Upgrading from your current device depends mostly on your budget.
I would recommend an Apple Silicon iPad. M3 iPad with OLED screen may be released next year.

      Hi Alex:

Your recommendation of Apple Silicon iPad. M3 iPad with OLED screen sounds like latest and greatest.

I use 5th gen. iPAD an hour/day for wifi browsing only. How big a security risk to wait for your reccomendation. My alternative:

      iPAD 9th generation, WI-FI with 64GB – $329.99

      Thanks, CMA

How big a security risk to wait for your recommendation.

Usually after an OS has been patched and the details of the security patches were published the risk for those who haven’t patched is greater.

Buying a Refurbished iPad from Apple gives you 1 year support and you get an iPad ‘like new’.

Alex, great suggestion from you. I checked this out:     https://www.apple.com/shop/refurbished/ipad/ipad

Great prices on refurbished models. Only problem I ran into was when I chose option of lower RAM (whatever model), it was always out of stock. Do you have any experience with Apple refurbished models, e.g., is it worth checking for a couple of weeks to see if lower RAM models come into stock?

I my self don’t, but friends did and they approved the quality.

Alex, Thanks for the great recommendation. I received an 8th gen refurbished iPad at a real good price and am very happy with it. I’ll like get an additional 12″ later gen iPad in addition.

        Great work!

How to fully turn off the Contact Photo & Poster “feature” in iOS 17.1.2?

Anyone has a fix for this issue, which I too find very annoying and indeed backwards (with no turn-off that I can find): https://discussions.apple.com/thread/255156165

PS: I have written Apple Feedback already!

How to fully turn off the Contact Photo & Poster “feature” in iOS 17.1.2?

You can turn off for yourself but you can’t turn off receiving Contact Photos / poster

      https://allthings.how/how-to-disable-contact-poster-in-ios-17-on-iphone/

      • #2608140

Did you read the link provided?  I want the feature (??) removed from Contacts as it takes too much vertical space. As the original Apple poster, I don’t want to scroll down to see details of each contact.  I much prefer the designs found in 16.x.

The way I see it, the Contact Photo & Poster feature is geared towards non-business users and it should be optional.

PS: your link misses the point.  That’s not what I’m looking for.
