Apple announces M3 Ultra—and says not every generation will see an “Ultra” chip
..When asked why the high-end Mac Studio was getting an M3 Ultra chip instead of an M4 Ultra, Apple told us that not every chip generation will get an “Ultra” tier..
Sorry for the delayed comment… I didn’t see this until now.
I’m paying attention to Will’s discussions of Apple hardware because I am seriously contemplating moving on from my Win-10 and can’t-be-upgraded-to-Win11 laptop, not to a new Win11 laptop, but to the new M4 MacBook Air.
It’s hard for me to wrap my head around the idea that any M3 chip (specifically here, the Ultra) could be more of a power play than the M4 Max chip in the new MacBook Air, but the numbers aren’t even close. M3 Ultra kicks M4 Max butt in two specific, important hardware elements, if you’re editing media: CPU cores and built-in GPU. See https://beebom.com/apple-m3-ultra-vs-m4-max-which-mac-studio-to-buy/
Most of my photo and video editing is on my Windows desktop, which can be upgraded to Win11. But when I’m traveling, I need a laptop that can do it well. I’m noting that mrs. teuhasn2’s MacBook M2 Pro is fast and effective at media editing; a MacBook Pro is just more pricey than I want to go for my more limited use than her primary one.
Reviews are beginning to emerge on the new M4 Max MacBook Air in media editing. I’ll stay tuned in.
