Veterans find relief from nightmares with NightWare and Apple Watch

The new system uses Apple technology to help disrupt nightmares for those with PTSD

Every night for more than a decade, Robert Guithues dreaded closing his eyes and falling asleep. That’s because when he did, he was transported back to the burning oil fields outside of Baghdad, or to a forward operating base in the mountains of Afghanistan, where his unit was attacked for 278 days out of its yearlong mission there…

NightWare is a digital therapeutic system that works in conjunction with Apple Watch and iPhone to disrupt nightmares related to post-traumatic stress disorder.1 Available by prescription only, it’s also the first and only digital therapeutic developed specifically to treat nightmares that is cleared by the FDA.2 NightWare uses information from the Apple Watch heart rate sensor, accelerometer, and gyroscope to detect a nightmare and then disrupt it through haptic feedback, generating gentle pulses on the wrist that gradually increase until the user is roused from the nightmare, but not from sleep…

Hmpf. This probably works only on those who are extremely deep sleepers. I tried to wear the watch while sleeping as that was a main reason I bought it, but every little thing done by the watch immediately woke me. I turned off the face (so there would be no light emitting from that) but that doesn’t stop the green and white lights that periodically emit from the back of the watch. Those and gentle taps for reasons other than arousing a user from a nightmare kept waking me up so I had to stop wearing it to monitor my sleep.

(Sorry, the quote is not right but the site doesn’t put the quote in the reply textbox now after you highlight it. Geez…this site is messed up on Fx now …it has stuck whether or not the question has been resolved….what is that doing in the MIDDLE of a reply I am trying to make here? That is irrelevant to this post. I have the latest Fx ESR version 102.4.0 but apparently it is broken here now…I’ll reboot and hope that will fix this…I am NOT installing regular Fx version where maybe it works correctly.

I rebooted and the site now puts the part of your comment I wanted to quote properly in the text box.

BUT The placement for “if your question has been resolved” is absurd and very distracting and confusing! But then Fx 102.4 ESR is the current supported version and a tech site certainly should do this better for Fx! But then I have to endure a really ugly side bar here. That did not happen until a few months ago in all the years I’ve been a member here.
