    Let me qualify me:

I have had email since 1986. I have my own email on a shared server as well as other email accounts I have used for YEARS including Gmail. I have used an iPhone since a month after first release….

IOS 18 Apple Mail removed the ability to PUSH email accounts other than iCloud, Yahoo and one I forgot. Gmail is NOT one of them. Nor any of MY other emails.

Forever and until last week, I could send my self an email and watch the Mail badge update within 2 minutes if not MUCH sooner. Now, Gmail for example (so we don’t start blaming my other email accounts and servers) are FETCH only. There is no drop down option for PUSH any longer for it. And even if PUSH is globally selected, it will only fetch unless iCLoud, Yahoo and that one other. The quickest update interval for FETCH is 15 minutes.

Now Fetch will try every 15 minutes. If you receive an email and it is close to that 15 minute fetch, it might appear push is working. But if fetch had just run, it could be 15 minutes until the badge changes and a notification for the email appears.

    This is

So, unless I have missed something and I doubt I have, Apple quietly emasculated Apple Mail.

What is the best alternative email client for iPhone and iPad?? MUST have push.

This will not be an easy change for me. Very unhappy camper.

Google determines whether Push is available or not, according to reports.  This means you are probably limited to the gmail app for gmail…

I have found over time that Apple’s own iOS mail was too limited and have used Edison Email on all my devices for personal accounts and Outlook for work accounts.  Both tend to be more reliable for me on cellular.  I used to use Airmail and liked it until they changed the pricing.

In reality, I want more interesting features but usually return to these two because they are visually pleasing.  I also have been testing Fastmail’s app, but I find the font unreadable.  I hear that Fastmail keeps all of its changes on the server side.  That email has certainly been more reliable when icloud email stops working.

Thanks for the reply. I shall check out Edison.

Pont to make though: ALl my accounts pushed until IOS 18. And same on iPadOS 18. Both have push missing for all accounts. Including the one I host and manage myself.

Thanks, Alex. Paul is rtight. I get ALL my mail, ALL accounts. Just can take up to 15 minutes for it to show. Unnacceptable. Especially since was “just right” for what, 15 years?

Of course, Alex. I believe I mentioned that there is a single PUSH kill switch and NO account has a push option since 18. There is Fetch and Manual. Period. This changed without warning.

I even watch a (pretty good) THREE HOUR video on 500 new features in IOS 18 and this never mentioned.

Email is not longer real time. It was for 15 years.

Been a bit under the weather. Today I shall try a handful of email apps on my ipad. Less critical. And if I can get one account to push and the app will handle 4 email accounts, all my IMAP folders, etc, then likely will switch. If not unsure. But was || close to buying a MacBoook Pro and Studio Display and now postponing as I’m incredibly disappointed with this. Something this mission critical.  Such a poor decision.

OK. LOTS of research and testing and IOS Mail after IOS 18 ONLY supports push for iCloud and Outlook accounts. No others. I have proved this to myself and confirmed after extreme testing. So IMAP accounts that worked prior to IOS 18 for PUSH, no longer do.

Some claim that the Gmail and Outlook apps WILL use other IMAP accounts with push, but I could not make those work. It is VERY possible that for that work one must removed the default IOS Mail app. That is just too much for me to try. I would be happy to switch apps if they would work with PUSH along side IOS Mail.

Best alternative email app for iOS of 2024

      * Pity that Thunderbird Mobile doesn’t support iOS.
      * Strange that Gmail is not on the list.

Agree. If I ever get the gumption, will note all the email and calendarsettings, IMAP folders, etc then delete Apple Mail and start fresh with Outlook. Still might not get push back. But won’t if I keep things this way.

I’m running Thunderbird on both Intel Macs and Apple Silicon Macs. Download from their website.

Yeah, but @rebop2020 has been having issues with Apple Mail on his iPhone, not on his desktop. I just looked, and Alex is right…Thunderbird’s downloads page has options for Desktop and Mobile, but under the Mobile heading, they only offer downloads for Android right now.  😐
