Apparently Ad Blockers are not allowed on Youtube. Is this a new thing they’ve implemented?

    From the mod team:

Yes, this has been confirmed as an experiment by YouTube, confirmed by a YouTube employee that reached out to me…

I haven’t seen that popup.  I also haven’t seen any ads on YouTube, other than the ads that the creators themselves do in the middle of their videos.

AdGuard blocks 17, uBlock Origin blocks 19, and Malwarebytes blocks 3.

Thanks Alex5723 and bbearren, like bbearren I do not see that popup notice or any ads at YouTube also. I do not sign in, so I wonder if that may matter. I am using a current version of the Brave browser and have the Shields set to Aggressively block trackers and ads. In the screenshot I copied the popup notice from Alex5723 using the Windows 10 Snipping Tool, but did not get it by checking a few videos at the YouTube website. Interestingly, my browser extensions; Disconnect, Privacy Badger, and uBlock Origin do not show any numbers blocking anything, only the Brave Shields show blocking 13 items. Wonder if it is just a YouTube experiment. Gives us something to “Rant” about, Thanks Alex5723.  😉

I’ve never found a way of turning them off on my phone, so I never use YouTube on my phone, but I’ve just checked on my laptop and I’m not seeing any ads there at present. I use AdBlockPlus

If they make it so that you have to watch ads other than the paid promotions that some creators embed in their videos, then I’ll stop watching YouTube entirely

Really, letting advertisers run the world is almost as bad as letting politicians do it

I use Firefox on my phone, and my Firefox registration carries all my extensions with it, so I don’t see ads on YouTube on my phone, either.  I seldom watch YouTube on my phone, but when I do, no ads.

Except for “ad videos” that appear before the real video itself starts, I also don’t see any ads using Ad Block+ and SeaMonkey.

BTW, I also have an extension that disables autoplay for all videos (they always start paused) and if I simple wait out the 5-10 sec timer, I get a “Skip Ads” button that allows me to view the real video without having to view the ad videos first!

That’s the worst kind of ad, though. If the adblocker is working, you shouldn’t see those either.

As I indicated, they show up paused and, if I simply wait 5-10 secs, a “Skip ads” button appears that takes me directly to the video I want to watch.

If the adblocker is working, you shouldn’t see those either.

Even with Ad Block+ active, youtube videos have always had “ad videos” that come up before I could see the real video.

They “use” to have their own special css class that I was able to block using Mozilla’s userchrome.css, but a few years back that changed and they now show up with the same class as the actual videos which prevented me from viewing any videos and I had to remove it.

Have you tried other adblockers? With uBlock Origin, I have never had one of those video ads appear in Firefox, Waterfox, or Vivaldi.

That’s useful to know. I use Firefox on my laptop, but I’d never bothered to install it on my mobile, because I do very little browsing on the phone, and what little I do goes through DDG

      I’ve installed it now
