Opened Chrome this morning to sign in and there was a pop up wanting me to sign into Disqus. Never seen that before so I closed it and continued to sign in to Chrome.

    HELP

It’s used by many web sites for comments:

Yes. Long time ago I used it a fair bit. I’ve three user account profiles on it.

Thanks for the replies. Guess I should have been more specific in my question.

I’m wondering why it’s window popped up over the gmail sign in window this morning since nothing has ever done that before. I don’t do social media and evidently it’s a sign in to Disqus for all social media sites. Has Google allowed Disqus to pop up over their sign in pages now for some reason and has this happened to anyone else??? Scares the heck out of me LOL.

I haven’t looked into it. I’d surmise that Google’s arrogant hegemony has combined with Disqus’s aspirations to weasel out their market share have created that scenario. A few years back I took all of my important data away from Google. When I wrote that I’ve three Disqus accounts, my understanding is that I would sign into its own site. But someone will know the answer to your line of questions.

Go to the following part of the link provided by @b: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disqus#Criticism,_privacy,_and_security_concerns

The first sentence of that part claims that Disqus serves its content up through widgets. Perhaps you visited a site that uses Disqus and that site surreptitiously installed one of these in Chrome? A thorough scan with your anti-crapware solution might just ferret it out and uninstall it for you.

An alternative (if you haven’t done so already) would be to go looking through the myriad of settings in Chrome to see if one of the recent updates added built-in Disqus functionality to your copy of Chrome, in which case I’d expect that there’d be a way to turn it off or disable it from within the settings UI.

Web widgets are installed on a web site, not a user’s computer or browser:

Install Disqus. How you install Disqus will depend upon the website platform you use.

Guess I’ll have to start looking. Not sure where to start. I looked at extensions and nothing there so I ran MalwareBytes and nothing there either.

Serious question. Why do people supposedly like Disqus? One of my server providers moved to it years ago and basically dropped their forum. To me, it was somewhat confusing and stunk. Haven’t been there in years and have no plans to go back.

Good question but in my case, I have no use for it anyway since I don’t do any social media etc. It bothers me that it showed up unexpectedly on trying to sign in to gmail.

        @CADesertRat

After reading other replies here, and your own reply indicating that Malwarebytes turned up nothing, I’m inclined to believe that perhaps you caught Google in the middle of a test that they thought wasn’t “public” yet, but had been accidentally made “public” by an errant setting.

Per @b ‘s quoted statement, web widgets are installed on a site, not in one’s browser, so that coupled with what you saw, makes me think that there was a setting that was misapplied on their site when you went to login to GMail that one time.

I’ve checked with some folks I know who literally “live” on Google and their web-based products (yes, they use them that much), and none of them has been prompted to login to Disqus when they’ve tried logging into one of Google’s web-based services.

I’m beginning to think you are right @Bob99. Per B’s comment, I have never ever been to Disqus site or seen it mentioned before this. Never heard of it until the pop up LOL. Hopefully this is the end of it for me and Disqus. Hard telling what Google might have done.

I’ll let this thread sit for awhile and then if nothing else happens, I will mark it as resolved. Thanks to all who responded 🙂

So far no more pop ups so I assume it’s a one off from Google. I will mark as resolved
