Just wanted to post about an issue I ran into with my Canon Pixma MG7520 wireless printer this week. I found what appears to be a work around, and wanted to just share it in case anyone here had the same issue.

The problem with many Cannon printer models was that suddenly this past week (May30-June3) various Canon wireless printers would no longer work – they would shut down, recycle and never be able to print. Canon posted this on their site:

Canon U.S.A., Inc. has recently become aware of a situation where select Canon inkjet printers continuously reboot or power down after Canon logo appears if the product is connected to the internet. If this occurs, the printer cannot be used.

    Affected models:

    • PIXMA iP110
    • MAXIFY iB4020
    • MAXIFY MB2020
    • MAXIFY MB2320
    • MAXIFY MB5020
    • MAXIFY MB5320
    • PIXMA MG6620
    • PIXMA MG7520
    • PIXMA MX490 / MX492

Canon has posted several solutions there, but I also found one in the support forums by a member there, Sheri99 that has worked for me and might for anyone else who may be affected by this issue.

    In essence, Sheri99’s fix is:

Completely unplug your router and then turn on your printer (it won’t stay on if your router is because of a linking problem with the router, that we are going to fix.) So this is the step-by-step for the MG6620 and probably those models with similar menus, but whatever model you have just try to get to your DNS Server Setup. That is where the setting is that needs manually changed. So for the MG6620:

On the menu swipe to Setup, then find Web Service Setup then DNS Server Setup. Select Manual. Press each set of numbers and change them all to 000 except the last set. That needs to be 001. So your DNS will look like this: 000.000.000.001 Click OK, then click No.

That’s it. You should be good to print.

I tried it and as soon as I disconnected from my internet hotspot (not a router) – the printer came back on and I was able to then reset the DNS, and when I turned the wireless back on, I could print wirelessly. I never tested a USB connection, as this worked.

Just thought it might help someone else. If this is in the wrong forum, of if mods find it not pertinent, please feel free to move or delete.

Does the Canon printer send a copy of every page you print, scan… to Canon Japan ?
Why does the printer need Internet connection ?
What was the original DNS servers IP ?
Wouldn’t it be easier to block the printer’s IP in the router ?

Actually, I guess I meant my local wifi connection, though I think the way it was originally set up, it was able to access the internet for firmware updates, etc.

What was the original DNS servers IP

I’m not sure I remember is all, but it was something like 192.168.xxx.xxx – which I guess is Canon’s access point/IP address DNS?

That seems to be where the issue is – and somehow changing the DNS to what they recommended in the post did allow it to access my local wifi on my hotspot – not the whole internet? I’m just guessing – kind of like voodoo to me, but it has worked so far, and I am grateful, since I was just about to give up and get a new printer. This only happened in the last few days — since May 30 – so whatever Canon did, it certainly caused a lot of issues. It just suddenly would not turn on/stay on when the wifi was on.

Does the Canon printer send a copy of every page you print, scan… to Canon Japan ?

LOL – I wouldn’t put anything past anyone these days!

      192.168.xxx.xxx

192.168.xxx.xxx is an IP on local home network, not DNS server IP.

Thanks! Whatever it was – changing it to all zeros, but 001 for the last 3, has seemed to have worked. We’ll see if the fix holds when I restart it all tomorrow.

There is a firmware fix offered per this borncity.com Blog that may even equate to what you did …….

      https://borncity.com/win/2022/06/05/canon-pixma-maxify-printers-mx492-etc-manual-firmware-update-fixes-restart-loop/#more-24777

      Manual firmware update provides fix

The firmware updates to fix the bug must be downloaded from Canon’s support pages for the affected devices and installed manually.

To download the June 3, 2022 firmware, go to the support pages for the respective device type using the links above (they are also listed in the support article).
Then, download the firmware update package and extract this download file on a Mac or Windows computer. In professional manner.
Then, in a file manager, navigate to the Firmware – How To folder and then to the subfolder of the desired language.

There you will find an html file with instructions to run the Printer Update utility located in the unzipped folder. The tool, developed for macOS or Windows, should guide you through the steps for the firmware update.
