I have my settings for ‘download but wait for me to decide’ on my Windows Update in 64-bit Win7 Pro. I noted no notifications from the Windows Update during the day, but when I went to shutdown late last night there was that little shield on the shutdown button telling me Windows would be installing updates and then shutting down once I hit the button. Nice of them. I went to bed as six updates were being installed.

This morning when I booted up I was treated to a couple of reboots with text lines watching further changes to a bunch of settings and the registry before finally giving me a desktop so I could go see what was installed and to re-verify the setting was still download but I decide (which it was).

The six updates are fine, but the manner in which I had them installed was not.

Anyone else get serviced against their will last evening?

Update to the Windows Update client can be installed even with your settings. Did you check what the updates were changing?

By “fine,” I meant I would have OK’d their installation (they were all security updates). Another thing that was unusual for me is I usually get notification of downloads awaiting my approval on Weds or Thurs. after patch Tues., not on patch Tues. (which of course I didn’t actually get notification just installation).

Things are constantly changing at WU so I set all of the win 7 computers ( that I don’t want win 10 on ) to “Never check for updates” and I manually check every couple of weeks and on patch Tuesday’s.

Upon a little research, that is the default behavior for your setting. If you have pending updates and shut down the PC Windows wants to install the updates. The thinking is you just wanted to defer them for a little while but really wanted them so installing at shutdown does not interfere with your normal activities.

You may want to rethink KB3083710 which is for Windows Update Client.

I’m wary these days of MS enhancing anything that can slip Win 10 in and I have that one hidden.

If you don’t want Win 10 on your machine, then change your update settings to Check for but let me choose and then you can click on each and see what the More info link gives for them.

I have three Upgrade to Win 10 updates hidden that didn’t come with the fanfare that you see on the main update notification page.

Wise, because that one reset DisableOSUpgrade (“inadvertently”) and so means where GWX Control Panel was used it now needs to be run again:

Check that your Windows 10 upgrade block settings are still in force

Yup, I hid it also. It has joined a long list of Win 10 related updates.

I have seen these settings magically change from my setting of inform and let me decide to the default of automatic install. So it is wise to check them periodically.

If you shut down when updates have been dl’d and do not pay attention you might miss the ‘ install updates ‘ being offered, which is the default. Been there don that!!

They sure are coy about what all those wonderful improvements are lol.

And thanks to all, yup, my disabling Win10 upgrade in registry had indeed been reset to allow it—fortunately it had not started to download yet.
