This post concerns the installation of the Nero update to version 7.5.9.0 but is different in content from post 625,439 so I’ll make a new thread.

After installation of said update, I did my usual check of MSCONFIG Startup to see what Ahead had added and found the following two programs listed:

C:Program FilesCommon FilesAheadLibNMBgMonitor.exe
C:Program FilesCommon FilesAheadLibNeroCheck.exe

Since I use Nero only occasionally and see no reason for hogging up resources, I proceeded to disable the two programs. Last night I was attempting to run both Excel and Word (Office 2000) and received the abort error message shown in the attachment. Access and PowerPoint continued to run OK. Digging around for this error at the MS site yielded lots of hits, several of which dealt with turning on or off possibly conflicting programs in Startup. Just for the heck of it and a quick check, I went back and turned these two programs back on, assuming I might be in for a long night. Well, when I did so, the Excel and Word aborts stopped and all is back to normal – as far as I can tell.

Since I know not what the two Nero programs are for (yet), I just thought I’d send up a warning flag…

I wonder whether the NeroCheck.exe program is the one by which Nero checks automatically whether there are updates for the program available. Not sure about the other one.

Have you tried enabling (or disabling) only one of these two to isolate which one is the culprit?

No, I haven’t Ian, but I will later tonight or tomorrow. I too could’nt understand why an update checker would cause such a problem.

Hi Al,

I also run Nero Ultra Enhanced v7.5.9.0. I have not tried to disable the two programs you mentioned. However, I also run WinPatrol which has features that can provide information about most programs.

Here is what WinPatrol says about NeroCheck.exe:

Nerocheck.exe installs with the Nero CD/DVD burning programs by Ahead Software including Nero UltraEdition 7. It is described as follows: “The NeroCheck program looks for known driver conflicts with our Nero software. So that when a Nero Log file is printed, at the very bottom of the Nero log file you will find a list of drivers we have found on your system that could be causing conflicts, if you are running into problems.”.

This file shouldn’t be necessary once you have Nero isntalled and working properly. We’d recommend removing it via WinPatrol. If you run into problems, simply re-enable it.

And for NMBgMonitor.exe, WinPatrol reports:

Nmbgmonitor.exe, nerofirststart.exe and neroscoutoptions.exe will appear in your c:Program FilesCommon FilesAheadLib folder. These files install with Nero 7 Premium. Nero Scout is a searchable database that indexes all of your media files. Nero Scout is available from within the program and is also present in “My Computer” and in File > Open dialog boxes.

These files can hog system resources. If that’s a problem on your system, consider turning Nero Scout off. This is best done within its own interface rather than removing the files using WinPatrol. Double-click your ‘My Computer’ icon. Right-click on the Nero Scout icon and choose Options. Then uncheck the option that reads “Enable Nero Scout”.

Just to state the obvious, my machine is up to date with MS patches, virus scans, spybot, adaware and spywareblaster, so it’s as “clean” as I know how to make it. In addition to this thread, I’ve also:

post 635,660 Groused about a BSOD.

post 636,479 And pointed an “accusing” finger at QuickTime,

for slogging up my computer and causing it to run like a car engine with syrup for motor oil in the past several days. Well, this morning I managed to get to Task Manager quickly enough to catch the culprit and it was the Nero family of gunk. NMBgMonitor.exe was chewing up huge hunks of CPU and when I terminated it and NeroCheck.Exe and rebooted, the machine went back to a more normal mode of speed. I disabled both programs in MSCONFIG and now am (or will be) on a hunt to see if I can still tolerate the Nero product or if I have to dump it in the toilet and find something else to use.

I only occasionally burn CDs and have used Nero all these years for it was the best I could find way back when I started with it. But for my occasional use, I can’t fathom having Nero programs chewing up system resources 24/7 for no good reason. I do have the latest version and I’m gonna try all over again, with an un-install and see if I can figure out some way to get the bare minimum running, eliminating all the facets of the family that I don’t use or need. Chime in if you have any advice for a tinkerer or some suggestions for alternative burner programs that might be more suited to an occasional burner like me. Thanks for listenin’ …

Hi Al,

Read the attached for more information about NMBgMonitor.exe… gleaned from WinPatrol. I have Nero Scout (the culprit) turned off and do not experience any of the issues that have brought your PC to its knees.

I’m not sure if you can turn off NeroScout directly. You might have to uninstall and then perform a selective install of the desired components.

Thanks for coming back in, Bob, as I knew you would. In the Nero Scout application there is a tick box to enable or disable it and I just did it. But, I think I’ll remove the whole package and try over again, since I had that German language problem the last time. At least this time I know what I’m looking for. Thanks again…

Al,

For future reference, disabling Nero Scout many times won’t get the job done….. it still runs in the background. So, to remove Nero Scout, do the following:

1. Start > Run
2. Just execute: regsvr32 /u “%COMMONPROGRAMFILES%AheadLibMediaLibraryNSE.dll”
