This looks very similar to Google-Android phone users being able to install only APK apps from Play Store or from other sources. In practice, Google-Play Store has remained dominant for app installs by Android phone users bc of familiarity and convenience.

IOW, Win 10 Cloud users will also likely be able to install only UWP apps from M$-Windows Store or direct from a software company’s website. Win 10 Cloud users will not be able to install desktop/Win32/.exe programs/software.
Eg Adobe Systems will hv to convert their Win32/.exe Adobe Photoshop program into a UWP app b4 they can make Photoshop available for purchase and download/install by Win 10 Cloud users via Adobe’s website or Windows Store.

It looks like Microsoft is desperately trying to move away from Win32 applications (why?).
I think even today apps can be installed from other (private) stores. So I am not sure if this is a new feature or it is only taken into mainstream.
The PowerShell – Command switchover is not really a new feature, being available today. This would only be a default configuration change.

        Bc of M$$$$$$.

Nadella’s 2014 “Cloud first, Mobile first” business strategy.

Google and Apple are making loads of money$$$$$$ from Play Store/Android n App Store/iOS. M$ wanna copy Google and Apple = Win 10 Cloud users will only be able to install UWP apps from Windows Store or elsewhere, but not Win32 apps/programs.

If I understood the post correctly, this is a genius move, maybe evil genius.

You make the system run only the new apps, provide a converter (not sure it will work that seamlessly though), you permit the installation of new apps either through the app store or anywhere else. You just solved the biggest problem with Windows vs IOS: users and developers don’t want to be stuck in the walled garden, especially developers that would have to eventually pay for the privilege of selling their app through the app store.

Then, people convert their app, everybody starts to use the new system at last and Microsoft’s plan is on its way. Business could later lock down apps download to restrict it to only the app store, which would contain verified apps that in theory won’t harm your computer, so you just gave users choice without having to control them by IT and maintaining a better security than when they were able to download whatever they wanted. I know the reality is muddier as this security model is far from perfect and we don’t even touch the control of the confidentiality of company data aspect with those apps, but still, the idea could make its way through marketing that the new Windows is more secure for business, while leaving some choice for home users, until MS pulls the plug on non-store apps if they can do it later, to protect the home users from malicious software…

I so not like where Windows is heading.

Woody says, “It seems that the ability to restrict apps to Windows Store only is present in all editions of 1703. I can confirm that the setting is on my plain-vanilla copies of Win10 beta 15025.”

      Quoting Woody, “Un-flipping-believable.”

Another reason to remain on Win 7/8.1 or ‘elsewhere’ if this becomes a reality in April 2017(Creators Update/Version 1703).

Latest news(fake or non-fake.?) on Win 10 Cloud,

About Desktop App Converter/DAC converting Win32 apps to UWP apps, according to the comments at

Latest news on Win 10 Cloud,
excerpt, “Now, MSPoweruser has apparently confirmed that it will indeed be possible to upgrade Windows 10 Cloud to Windows 10 Pro, via a purchase through the Windows Store.”
      https://www.neowin.net/news/it-seems-you-will-be-able-to-upgrade-windows-10-cloud-to-windows-10-pro—and-heres-how

So far, there are SKUs for Win 10 Cloud RTM OEM:NONSLP, Win 10 Cloud RTM Retail, Win 10 CloudN RTM OEM:DM(source; petridotcom),
        Win 10 Starter, Win 10 Cloud, Win 10 Pro, Win 10 Ent G n Win 10 Ent Eval(source; @adguard /Twitterdotcom).

Likely, very few Win 10 Home users are upgrading to Win 10 Pro = less money$$$$ for M$. So it seems M$ wanna push more Win 10 Home users to upgrade to Win 10 Pro by eliminating Win 10 Home n replacing it with the more hobbled/deprecated Win 10 Cloud = more money$$$$ for M$. Presently, an upgrade from Win 10 Home to Pro costs a whopping US$99.

      @ jmwoods

One reason…Win64 applications can utilize more memory.

Which, to me, translates into *less efficient programing created by inexperienced programmers*!

Microsoft can now fire all those expensive, long term employees, as they are no longer needed!

It is actually about Win32 vs Universal (modern) Apps.
Nothing to do with bits under which the “old” style applications are compiled.
Like old desktop type of applications vs Store type.
