This is not an advertisement and I have NO connection or affiliation with Amazon except as a customer! I’d just like to relate a pleasant tech support story that just happened to me a few minutes ago.

Some time ago I had a thread here that I now can’t find where a fellow Lounger passed along a link for how to email Amazon about a story I wanted to tell them. The reason I was looking is that I wanted to thank him again for the link because I used it in a slightly different fashion today for telephone support from Amazon. The Amazon web pages are VERY “busy” and it’s difficult to come up with the link for contacting them, but here it is:
Amazon Customer Support . . . (If you’re already logged in, it will “know” who you are.)
Not long ago I ordered a wireless digital indoor/outdoor thermometer from Amazon and the UPS tracking site says it was delivered to my front porch but is nowhere to be found. I checked with my two neighbors to see if one of them has the package and my son, who has a key and is sometimes here when I’m not. No package anywhere.

I used the Phone tab on that Amazon contact page for “Call Me” and within seconds my mobile rang with a very helpful support rep on the line. UPS has told me that the shipper, not the receiver, is supposed to initiate tracing action, but the lady at Amazon agreed to ship another product for delivery TOMORROW! Can’t beat that with a stick as we used to say in New York!

I’ve been a long time customer of Amazon AND with shipping via UPS and this is the first time I’ve ever had a missing shipment. But my morale for today is lifted by excellent support.

That is a great story and a very unusual one these days. Especially around the holidays. And yes Virginia, there is a Santa Clause!

Glad to hear the good news about the support you received.

Now-a-days there are some people (not many) who have very little consideration for the expectations of the consumer..

I have found Amazon themselves really great, but you need to be careful when shopping on their site as some of the products are being sold by other organizations – Amazon just provide a shop front.

I had a problem with a product from one of these companies. The only contact details I had was an email address and they ignored my emails. Amazon would not even give me the address and phone number so I could try to take legal action.

I gave up in the end as it wasn’t worth any more effort for the relatively low value item involved.

That’s a good point, Stuart, and one I learned by accident quite some time ago. I was wondering why I wasn’t getting their free shipping on a particular purchase, which is frequently offered. I stumbled on an info screen that mentioned the “3rd party” sourcing of some products sold “through” Amazon. Evidently (at that time) Amazon didn’t control the shipping Ts & Cs of their 3rd party vendors. Ever since that time, I take care to check the source supplier of what I’m buying.

Trading Standards? If this applied to you, it quite probably applied to others…

Plethora means a lot to me.

I did think about it, but couldn’t face the time and effort that would be required.

I can certainly understand that. Our time is valuable. Reminds me of the thread I can’t find about my buggy coffee makers. The time involved with trying to get someone to take action isn’t worth it.

I’ve been using Amazon for years and find them exceptional in many ways.

A couple of months ago, I found an empty Amazon box on a lightly traveled street while walking my dog. I traced the address to a lady in my neighborhood, called her and told her about the box. Apparently, someone had stolen it off her porch. It was some sort of gaming device that her teenage son had ordered after saving his money for quite some time, around $70. She called Amazon and told me that they immediately shipped a replacement at no cost. I thought that was pretty decent of them.

Like Big Al, I too had the same exceptional response from Amazon. A book I had ordered showed that it was delivered on the tracking website but it was no where to be found. To my amazement, Amazon didn’t present me with various reasons the book could have gone missing i.e. stolen, misdelivered etc., but said a replacement book would be sent out immediately and I would have it in three days(!). As it turns out, my husband heard me on the phone with Amazon and was waving his hands around to get my attention (which I didn’t do as everyone knows that females can’t listen to two conversations at once!) and as I hung up, told me he found the book on the porch the day before and had put it away for our upcoming vacation per my instruction…I truly don’t recall making that statement but apparently I did:) I called Amazon back with my apologies and stopped the second book from being delivered.

My amazement comes from the fact that in this day of finger-pointing and lack-lustre customer service, this incident has stood out in my head as a shining example of exceptional company performance that other business’s should look to as the golden standard. Kudos to them.

And so it continues, our mutual support of Amazon.Com…

My son recently asked me to print a couple of mailing labels for him to return a book to Amazon, and in a followup email he made this statement:
”Yeah, Amazon is pretty good… I ordered some books from them (including the UK one I left for you to look at) & on one, they sent me the wrong book… That was the labels I sent you… plus they gave me a $5 gift card for the trouble in addition to refunding the $$… “
So, it looks like Amazon prefers speed and expeditious handling of customer problems rather than hassle. Good On ‘Em …
