I can’t find any Explorer setting which will sound an alert when my modem connection goes down. Does anyone know of such an option?

I suspect my ISP has over booked their lines. I am getting disconnected at least once an hour. I don’t have any of the timer settings activated. The server isn’t supposed to do an automatic disconnect.

What I am looking for is something to tell me as soon as it happens. Rather than after I wait for a page to NOT load.

Provided you have a dial-up service, try looking at IE’s Internet Options|Connections. If you select your ISP connection and then Settings|Properties, there should be an Options panel (or similar – depending on your OS) such as “Redial if line is dropped” or “Always redial if disconnected”. Make sure it is checked. This generally comes up with a notification panel as it redials.
