    Hello AskWoody members,

I am using Aegis 2FA on my Google Pixel phone.
I have used the export feature of Aegis to backup data to my phone and I have saved copies on my laptop. I have left the checkmark to encrypt the file.
My question is: I expected the application to ask me for a password/passkey to use to encrypt the file and it did not ask for one. How does the Aegis 2FA encryption work?
    Thank you.

According to their Github site you need to enter a password when you perform an encrypted backup because Aegis does not store your password.
Are you sure you created an encrypted backup?

      cheers, Paul

I use Aegis on my phone. You’re correct, it does not prompt for a password to export an encrypted backup. However, you had to setup a password when installing Aegis, and you have to be logged in to Aegis to export the backup, so I think that’s the password that it uses to encrypt the .json backup.

Aegis does not ask for a password to export a backup, but when you try to import that backup Aegis asks for the password, and I believe you need to give it the same password you use to login to Aegis.

Note that if you subsequently change your password, I presume this means you have to login to Aegis using the new password but use the old password to import your tokens from the backup. Upon import, you’d have to give it the password that was in effect when the backup was created.
