    I have Win 11 – 22H2 on a new (6 mo) Lenovo P16.

I’ve been getting popup ads in the lower right corner for “VideoStudio Ultimate 2023” – a couple times a day for several weeks now.  I don’t have any version of this software.  I do have Adobe Premier Elements and Adobe Photoshop Elements.

Just today, a new popup, in the same place – titled “A look back at your memories” along with a photo from my Pictures folder.

Where are these coming from? How can I stop these aggravating popups?  They stay there until I click them off.

“VideoStudio Ultimate 2023” is a Corel product. Have you installed any associated Corel products, or did any OEM add-ons come with the computer? Check Control Panel\Programs & Features and Settings App\Apps

Download and run Malwarebytes Free and see if it picks up any PUPS.

Yes, a couple Corel apps came with the computer – PaintShop Pro & AfterShot.  I don’t use them, so I uninstall them and see if that helps. Thanks,

I went into ‘Installed Apps’ and removed several “Corel” apps – all I could find.  Rebooted.  Today the ad came back.  I left the popup running and ran Task Manager and it showed “Corel Update Helper (x86)”.  If the ad is not running, it doesn’t show in Task Manager.  That Corel Update Helper is not in the ‘Installed Apps’.  I found a Corel folder in both C: ‘Program Files’ and ‘Program Files (x86)’.  I could try deleting those folders, but I’m guessing that might just cause something else to not be happy on startup.

      Any more ideas?

Go into Task Manager. On the Startup Apps tab, uncheck/disable Corel Update Helper if it’s there.
Also, look in Task Scheduler and see if there is a scheduled task for it – right click, disable/delete it.
Is it listed as a separate item in Programs & Features ot Settings Apps?

      If you didn’t, try rebooting.

Sometimes uninstalls can’t complete until you do.

Otherwise, download and install the free version of Revo Uninstaller and see if Corel Update Helper is listed.

Corel is infamous for not providing a way to uninstall their “adware“!

Also, instead of starting it using an entry in one of the “normal locations“, as pointed out above, they like to hide the hook that starts it in one of these 3 registry locations…

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

…or even install it as a Windows Service to make it even more difficult for users to find and remove it.

Note: the Names shown in those registry locations may not indicate it has anything to do with Corel but the actual program being run, listed under the Data column, will indicate which one it is.

Once you’ve delete the Run entry, you should be able to delete the program itself without experiencing any problems.

If it was installed as a Windows Service, disabling the service will stop the pop-up ads but actually removing it would be very complicated.

Of course, make a backup before you may any changes; “just in case“.
