• Adobe Reader/Foxit Reader Problem

I’m having an issue that I don’t think has been addressed here (if it has been, please feel free to point me to it).

I have long used Foxit Reader in place of Adobe Reader and have had no problems with it. Recently, however, I’ve had several documents that refuse to open in Foxit, instead showing the following error in the doc:

    33207-pdf

Obviously, since I’m not using Adobe, I cannot update it. My version of Foxit is up to date, but for whatever reason, this doc (and some, but not all) will not use it.

I have .pdf files associated with Foxit, is there something else I need to do?

    Thanks in advance, all!

Did you try to open any of the documents from within Foxit Reader?

        I have, yes. Same response.

It’s strange. Can you upload one of those documents, so that it can be checked for corruption or similar? I use NitroPDF reader, so that will remove Foxit as a factor.

I think it’s explained. Have a look at what Nitro showed:

      33210-CapturePDFFoxit

Seems it’s a special type of PDF file (dynamic XFA). For now, probably only Adobe products support it, since neither Foxit or Nitro do.

How weird. You would think it would have a different extension other than just plain .pdf if it was a different kind of file (or needed a specific program to open, I mean).

Nonetheless, I appreciate your detective work! Thanks.

        Update, from here:

These documents are encountered under a limited set of circumstances. First, it must be a dynamic PDF Form (created by Adobe Designer usually) and then processed by LiveCycle server for enabling features. If it is processed by LiveCycle and set for PDF 1.7 compatibility (Acrobat 8 or higher), then during a subsequent rendering/submission by the Reader/Acrobat client, it will use the dynamic XFA rendering functionality and will not update the PDF structures behind the form. Instead, Reader adds the warning message as the default PDF content.

Agree, it’s a bit weird. Not sure if it is a new PDF format feature. Guess I will have a quick check.

Anyway, I am glad I could help :).

I tried to install both Foxit and AdobeReader. Foxit worked fine at first, after installing Adobe the Foxit install was broken. The reason for installing Foxit was that on this one computer my son’s online textbook won’t work with the AdobeReader. (It will show the table of contents, but not go to the chapters.) On the other computers in the house it works fine. After multiple install/uninstalls, I just left Foxit on this computer? I was hoping for a do you want to open with Adobe or Foxit option.
