Adobe Reader 7.0.8 has just been released. The full download for Windows is 20.3Mb, but a smaller update for existing users should also be available via the built-in check for update system (can not test to see if they are available yet since I do not have Adobe Reader installed)

The smaller upgrade/patches will also be available from:
    Adobe Reader : For Windows
    Adobe Reader : For Macintosh

At time of posting the updates were not yet available from the Adobe download site but should be very soon.

      Tony,

I just ran the “Check for updates” within Acrobat Reader and got “No new updates at this time” message. Perhaps they haven’t got the update file uploaded yet? grin

      • #1014247

It seem quite common that, except for antivirus signatures, the built-in update generally is delayed a few days after an update becomes available. Whether this is to manage the heavy load on the servers, or to let the early adopters shake out any unnoticed bugs, well, I’m sure there is a reason for it. grin

      • #1014253

        Jeff,
They must have just fixed it. I updated within AAR and got they new version OK.

        • #1014261

Hmmm, I just ran the “Check for updates” utility and there was no update for 7.08. However, there were 2 other updates which I passed on:

          – Adobe Reader 7.05 Language Support
          – Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.0

I’m in no rush to update Acrobat Reader, so I’ll simply wait a couple of days and see if anything changes. My current version is 7.07.

Hilarious! Me too, Jeff. I have 7.0.7 and “no updates” is what I got too. Funny thing is, I’ve always treated Adobe Reader like toothache medicine – something you’ve gotta have but couldn’t care less about. I won’t tell ya how long I stayed with Version 5 and probably would have continued except that me new Dell came with Version 6. Ho Hum…

Edited: I now realize that sounded like censored and I didn’t mean it to. It’s just that Adobe’s Reader is one of those things that I wouldn’t even look twice at if it weren’t so necessary, in so many places. I meant no offense, Tony, for you keeping us apprised of the update. Apologies…

    • #1014274

I still use Version 6.0 – any reason why I should update to the newer versions? I only use it for when I have to print the Medicare Summary Notices and the Anthem EOBs. evilgrin

      • #1014275

I found version 6 painfully slow to load. Version 7 is quite a bit faster.

      • #1014278

Hans is right, Lonnie. I hadn’t paid any attention so I rebooted my machine just to be sure I started from “clean memory.” The Version 7 Reader started almost instantaneously with no splash page, which is MUCH better than all previous versions. I did also download the 7.0.8 version directly and installed it.

Thanks Tony for including the MAC update notification in your post! thumbup Of course my PC is happy that you keep it up to date too! grin

If you care to NOT have the Adobe Download manager installed as part of this process download the full product using an ftp client. Connect to http://ftp.adobe.com and then navigate to /pub/adobe/reader/win/7x/7.0.8/enu/AdbeRdr708_DLM_en_US.exe

        Joe,

Although your great tip is a little late in coming for me (I already downloaded the full package), is that “Download Manager” still resident on the HDD after Acrobat Reader is installed? If so, I’d like to remove it…… where is it? scratch

Not only does the performance of the website leave a lot to be desired, but Adobe Reader 7.0.8 takes 1 minute 50 seconds on a 3 GHz PC with ample memory to “prepare for reading” an untagged, 5-page, 89 KB music score! Unbelievable…!

I have earlier disabled the automatic update feature in Adobe Reader, and sometimes done a manual check. I think there were two minor downloads available (photo? and some other) left during 7.05 – 7.07. I have done the updates with patch downloaded from their page.

Anyhow, now with 7.08 the manual check does not work. It does not even go out on the Internet (as seen in TCPView). I removed the rule for Reader in ZoneAlarm to see if the program would trigger the ZA, but no. Only thing is a question if I would allow Reader to access the Trusted zone. No Internet traffic.

Anyone know what might cause this?

            • #1016092

Are you using any tweaking utility to limit what functions Reader loads?

              Joe,
No I don’t. Also have found that if I, under settings, change from “No automatic updates” to either Download or Remind me (don’t know what called in English ver.), then the next date to check is June 3 … that day has already passed. Closing and opening the program does not change this. Under Settings > Updates the Installed updates button is greyed out. Odd.

Have you tried Help | Detect & Repair? If you have and it still does not work try a complete uninstall and reinstall.

              Joe,
Thanks for your reply. Seems that we here at the Lounge almost always get a thread like this with a new Adobe Reader update, problem downloading, rotating document, open documents etc. Well, at least it keeps us busy.

Sorry, did not mention, but before my last reply I had tried a Detect & Repair with no working result. To get rid off the 7.0.7 and 7.0.8 patches to my original 7.0.5 file I downloaded the complete full 7.0.8 install file. I then uninstalled my 7.0.8 Adobe Reader, removed some left over folders (search cache, minor settings etc.) and installed the program from my new downloaded file. After some initial check, opening a file, I tried Help | Check for updates. It did not work! Very quickly, I got a prompt “There are no updates”, ZA prompted that AR wanted access to Trusted zone, I allowed. However, no Internet checks.

After some coffeetime and a pause I got thinking, hey maybe AR as many other programs are depending IE to get Internet access. (Even if not IE must be running some programs uses the TIF folder, Spywareblaster uses it for updates.) I know that I sometimes set IE in offline mode (and that setting is also connected to Windows Media Player getting offline), I did this more often when on dial-up modem.

So I checked IE, it WAS in offline mode and I changed to online. Started AR, checked for updates lo and behold, it WORKED! ZA kicked in asked if I allowed Internet access and when I did AR found two updates (photo-whatever and some language pack).

censored, here I have a working Internet connection and a working web browser (Firefox) and Adobe Reader is depending on whether IE is offline or not, scchh.

Thanks Joe for your help, and sorry to bother you.

            • #1016387

Not a bother. I’m just glad you got it worked out. clapping And yes, many programs use the IE options and connections setting to determine Internet accesibility. Yet another reason to not remove it completely even if you decide to use another browser.

            • #1016337

The only way I could get it to install was to completely uninstall the previous version first.

            • #1016346

Then you did not download the patch, but the full install file?

            • #1016351

No, I downloaded the patch, but it wouldn’t work. So I deleted it, uninstalled Acrobat, and then downloaded the full version from their website and installed it.

            • #1016388

It seems as though Adobe/Macromedia have had some difficulties with their updates to AR recently. At least you were able to get it working. grin

I don’t know what this means, John, but I haven’t noticed any slow processing since I installed this latest. I just tested a file of a user manual of a couple of gig in size and it opened in seconds from a double click in Windows Explorer.

            • #1016115

              Hi Al

See how long it takes for you! The file is downloadable from the PDF icon just after CPDL #1966. It’s not the only PDF file I have which takes ages to load!

              John

            • #1016120

I updated to 7.0.8. Opening the PDF file you mention took about 4 seconds on my PC.

            • #1016143

Me too (as said Hans) John. I tried the file from within Firefox and by saving it to my hard drive. In both instances it opened in 2 or 3 seconds. (You DID mean 1996, didn’t you?)

            • #1016179

              Hi John,

I tried clicking on the icon to both download and load the PDF file… took about 4 seconds from start to finish. Then downloaded the file as a separate process. Opened up the PDF file in 2 seconds. Mind you, this was with Acrobat 7.0.8 Professional and so do not know if it might be the difference between the Reader and Acrobat versions.

I have found a work-around for the Content Preparation Progress window and the 100% CPU for ages:

Rename C:Program FilesAdobeAcrobat 7.0Readerplug_insAccessibility.api to something else.

There is a reference on this, found when Googling…

(Uninstalling 7.0.8 and reinstalling it gave no improvement; allowing reader_sl.exe to run at logon time, ditto.)

              John

            • #1016462

I’m glad you found a work-around, but it’s strange that others don’t have the same problem – I have this file too, and I experience no slowness. Did you turn on any accessibility options in Help | Accessibility Setup Assistant?

            • #1016483

Not as far as I am aware — I didn’t even know previously that it had Accessibility options!

As always, I appear to be unique (but this isn’t always a good thing…)!

My Acrobat 7.0.7 finally told me about 7.0.8 yesterday.

Howver, having applied the updates the various components of my Arcobat v7 Professional installation report as:
      Acobat v7.0.8
      Reader v7.0.8
      BUT
      Distiller v7.0.7

Any one else got this ‘shortfall’ effect?

      stuck

      • #1016029

I have the same versions as you.

        • #1016131

OK, nice to know it’s a ‘real’ effect and not just a quirk of my installation.

          Tony,

Another anomally? What is listed under Document properties for a PDF created in Word with Acrobat v7.0.8 Prof.? Mine reports:
Application: Acrobat PDFMaker 7.0.7 for Word
          PDF Producer: Acrobat Distiller 7.0.5

          Ken

          • #1016214

            Ken

I have the same version numbers but this is the expected result. It shows that no changes were made to PDFMaker when Acrobat 7.0.8 was released, and Distiller has not had an update since 7.0.5

If you check the Adobe Plugins you will see quite a few version numbers, with many plugins not being updated since 7.0.0 was originally released.

    • #1016112

I went to the site for the Windows version of 7.0.8 and the download went without hitch. So far so good.
I will report if any glitch occurs as I try to use the new version.
      Regards,
      Slim
