      I’ve tried 8 times to get this update and couldn’t. I keep getting Network disconnect messages, checksum errors, etc….. when using that silly Adobe Download Manager which it seems is the only way to get this update online. Using the “Check for updates” feature within AR shows the update to be 32 megs vs. 23 megs from the website download section…. so I don’t want that as I suspect it includes much more than I want/need. I’ll either try again later on today or try to find a way to download the update file directly, i.e., using IE Download Manager or a 3rd-party download manager. YMMV

        Did you make sure to clear the check box for “Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition” before downloading? (See screenshot).

        (I downloaded and installed Adobe Reader 8.1 without problems earlier today)

        I just downloaded Adobe Reader 8.1 for Windows vista and downloaded the 22.3MB file in about 1 minute. I downloaded it using Firefox’s built-in download manager.

        A direct link for the en-US version of Adobe Reader 8.1 for Windows without the bundled Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition or the Google Toolbar for IE – http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/read…dr810_en_US.exe%5B/url%5D

          @Hans: yep I unchecked that and following checkbox for Google Toolbar too.

          @Tony
          : Thanks for the direct link…. got that one fine. And, after 3 more exasperating attempts I finally got it to download and install using the “normal” method. I have attached a screenshot of one of the Adobe Download Manager for a couple of reasons: 1) to show how crazy things got, and 2) just for laughs as it is bizarre. dizzy

            You must have a VERY complete version of Adobe Reader now! laugh

            Adobe’s installer has always been cranky. For your further amusement;

            The Bride’s computer somehow assigned a permanent drive letter to her digital camera’s USB port. Whenever I updated version 7.n on the Bride’s PC, I had to plug her camera into the USB port, as otherwise the installer would choke when it found a mapped drive not attached. Took me a while to figure that out.

          I have just downloaded v8.1 of the reader from this address recommended by Tony. When I try to install it, it goes through the preliminary set up screen (Processing Adobe Reader 8.1.0) then pops up a message box:

          Windows Installer

          The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation

          I am the one and only user of this computer and have full rights (as far as I know). Any ideas?

          Thanks also for the direct link, Tony! For the life of me I couldn’t find how to download the whole thing just the once…

      FWIW, with Vista at home I had to end up using the integrated update in AR instead of using the IE ActiveX control. With IE I’d download AR then the install would fail because I did not have sufficient rights (even though I ran IE as admin.

        Joe,

        This may not apply, but I have read that AR requires that UAC be enabled to install successfully. IF <——– you are like me and have the UAC disabled, then you might try enabling it, reboot of course, and then try to install AR again. In my case (see above) it didn't make any difference what I tried… no success, period. Downloading the .exe file from This Link (thanks to Tony) and then manually installing it was the only way that worked for me.

          I’ve got UAC enabled. The update did work when I used the AR integrated updater.

      Ah, and so, a couple of days ago it (Adobe Reader 8.1) came in a Swedish language version (together with a bunch of other languages).

      I have never had any trouble with installing the Reader (though one time when using the built-in update checker when IE was in off line mode!), but I’ve said it before that with a new Adobe Reader update we will get a “problem-downloading thread”.

      No problem downloading either, this time. Though I didn’t do as they wanted.

      When I, just for fun, tested the standard way, unchecked Adobe Photoshop
