Administrative Share Purposes Only

Well I finally took delivery of my new system, what a nightmare. On one computer on the network I can share the drives, on the other I get the message “This share was created for administrative purposes only.” message. Funny both are current installs of XP-PRO SP2

I have read so much on the web that I am totally confused, does any body know how to share drives on three computers all with XP-PRO SP2?

I can share folders but for my purpose to configure this new box it would be best if I can share the drives.

If you can share folders you should be able to share a “whole” drive in the same manner. It’s just a matter of what you click in Windows Explorer. For reference, even though it sounds like you don’t need it all, read through this StarPost: post 589,883

This graphic shows the sharing screen for doing a folder or a whole drive. There isn’t much difference. The drive screen starts with the C$ default share but you would add a new entry instead. Come on back if you still have questions.

Hi Al
In your second graphic you will see the $ symbol after the drive letter, that indicates that the drive is hidden on the Network.
If you type into Google including the quotes

“This share was created for administrative purposes only”

You can read what I have read, broadly speaking (I don’t understand) all drives are by default set to share and be hidden on a small network, apparently you are meant to share folders not drives.

The problem is this fix did not work

It is interesting, I have three computers all running the same OS only one defaults to this, I agree with you, in that the other two behave as you indicate.

What I meant in my earlier post by “…you would add a new entry…” is the sequence shown in this attachment. Click the NEW button, in the next box, give your share a name, and you should then see an additional drive share where I have marked the number 3.
