• Address Book Weird in OL98 (OL98)

Just tried to export Address Book in OL98 to floppy. But in Address Book File menu “Import” and “Export” are greyed out. Did file search for *WAB and found 2 old address book files, but not current one. Made test addition of new address and found it registers as new change to *PST file. Somehow, my OL98 Address Book has become interwoven in*PST file. (Also tried *PAB search for Personal Address Book — but nothing there, either.)
How can I extricate Address Book into its own native WAB file (OL98 HELP says Address Book should be WAB file)…?

All Outlook data have always been saved in a pst file. Wab files are used in Outlook Express.

FRANCOIS: Thanks for taking the time and interest to offer your help. I think, though, that WAB files are not just used in OL Express. Here’s the Export Address Book text from )L98’s HELP files:
“To export your Address Book contacts to other programs. You can export your Address Book contacts to other Windows Address Book (.wab) files, as well as to Microsoft Exchange Personal Address Book, or any text (.csv) file. To export your Address Book files to another Windows Address Book: In Address Book, on the File menu, point to Export, and then click Address Book (WAB). Locate and select the Windows Address Book file you want to export to, and then click Open.
For all other address book formats: In the Address Book, on the File menu, point to Export, and then click Other Address Book. Click the address book or file type you want to export to, and then click Export.”

In addition, Francois, when I reformatted my HD few months ago, then copied files from external backup, OL98 Address Book file was WAB (I’ve never used OL Express). But I could not make OL98 see that old Address Book and had to create new one. But this new one is now part of PST file, so how can it be exported or copied to a floppy as backup??

You should be able to Export it to Excel and other type of files.

Select the “Contacts” folder, the on the menu, File, Import, Export then the file type and then follow the instructions.

DAVE: Thanx for taking an interest in this. Couple things:

            1) I don’t have Excel
            2) Do you mean Contacts folder in Folder list? That’s not what I want to Export.
            3) If you mean Contacts folder in Address Book, that’s what I want to export (backup) to floppy. But that’s the one where I said “Import” and “Export” are greyed out.

I am confused, are or are you NOT using the “Contacts” that are in the PST file?
If NOT, then I do NOT know what you are doing.

As for NOT having Excel, then you will need to select some other type, see attachment, Note this is from Outlook 2003, but the listing has been the same as far back as I can remember.

DAVE: I am familiar with that Export window. In my Folders list (a separate left-side vertical pane) in OL98 there is, of course, a Contacts folder, and “Export” is available for that It contains a lot — but not all — data I want; Address Book has more detail in it.
Address Book ALSO has a Contacts folder, but with (as I said above) additional info for some entries — that’s what I want to export to a floppy. But that’s also the one that does not provide access to Export or Import.
Strangely, old Address Book (WAB file) DOES let me import or Export.
If you’re confused, welcome to the club… :>(

Like others, it’s been a long time since I’ve worked with Outlook 98. It was, however, when Outlook had two separate installations: Internet Mail Only (IMO) and Corporate/Workgroup. It was also the case that in IMO the Address Book resembled a separate module, but it was “smoke & mirrors” in that it did not take the form of a separate file at all. (There is a Lounge post from MaryJ supporting this somewhere.)

I do also remember being able – in some way or other – to move data between Outlook and the WAB. Whether, however, that was using Outlook Export or importing using the WAB (or something else), I do not clearly remember. For the record, I used CW more frequently than I used IMO.

Unfortunately, I discovered too late that, even though I’m a single user, I’d have been better off configuring recent reinstall of OL98 as Corporate/Workgroup. Apparently it provides for more (or better? I’m not sure) features than IMO. But there’s not much I can do about that now; don’t think there’s a way to convert without completely re-installing — and risking losing or affecting PST file.
