Adding WinXP into LAN

There is a LAN with 3 Win98se PC. The hub is a SMC 4-port broadband router.

I want to add a WinXP machine into this LAN. During the installation of WinXP, it asked me to create a disk for other Windows machines on the LAN. What is the purpose of this disk? Should I use this disk on other Win98se machine to make the LAN work?

Can I just manually change the network property of Win98se machines instead of using the WinXP created disk?

I have add several XP machines to several working networks. I have never needed to make any changes to the working machines. Just setup your XP machine, turn OFF the MS ‘Firewall’, it is on by default. Set up your sharing and you should be ok. If you are running any firewalls on the other machines make sure that you have added the XP machine to their list. If you are going to use a shared printer from one of the other machines you will need to setup the connection.

For some hardware issues, I formatted the HD and installed WinXP from the scratch. I don’t know why this time WinXP did not ask me to create a disk for other machines on the network when using the Network wizard. Everything went through. Now I can see every machines from every machines on the LAN.
