Vista’s use of a pen drive or SD card to improve performance appears to be a good thing. It would be quite expensive to add more memory to my portable, currently has 1 Gb, but I wondered if there was improvements to be had by using the SD card slot or USB drive in the same way within XP. Has anyone come across any software that would do this?

No. That would require extensive changes to the memory management part of XP. Even if Microsoft could backport that functionality to XP (and I doubt they could) they would much rather have you upgrade to Vista.
