add “Paste Special” to right-click menu? (Word 2000 )

I frequently copy text from web pages to paste into Word documents. Is there any way I can add “Paste Special” to the right-click menu? I have created a customized toolbar icon for Paste Special but I’d like it even better if I could choose the command by right-clicking.

Incidentally, is “context menu” the correct name for that menu that pops up when I right-click something?

“Context menu” is an appropriate term; Word refers to them as shortcut menus.

To customize any of the shortcut menus:

Go to Tools > Customize.
In the Customize dialog, click on the Toolbars tab, then scroll down until you can see the listing for “Shortcut Menus”.
Click a checkmark next to this listing, and you will see a Shortcut Menus toolbar appear.
This toolbar will have three menus: Text, Table and Draw.
Click on the one for Text, and you will see a listing of all of the text-context shortcut menus – there are quite a lot of them. Word uses internal “contextual” rules to determine which menu is appropriate to display at a given moment.
The most frequently-seen one of these is “Text”.
Click on “Text” and you will see the shortcut menu pop up.
You can now customize this like any other menu:
With the Text shortcut menu displaying, click on the Commands tab in the Customize dialog.
Click on Edit in the Categories list.
Then scroll down the Commands list until you locate Paste Special.
You can just click and drag this command from the Commands list, onto your shortcut menu.

Also note that, the next time you quit Word, you may get a prompt to save changes to Normal.dot. In this case, you’ll need to say OK to save changes, if you want to retain this customizatoin behond the current Word session.

Thanks a million, Gary. Worked like a charm. A couple of months ago, I made a little macro (my first ever) for “Paste Special > unformatted text” so I wouldn’t have to click “unformatted text” everytime. I had also created a my own toolbar icon for it.

When I followed your directions but instead of dragging Paste Special from the commands list, I dragged my little macro icon onto the context menu and it works perfectly!

Thank you so much! I have much the same problem as the origial poster — I frequently must paste text from web pages into Word, and getting unformatted text was really a pain.
