The Control Panel applet allows me to choose which program to open when new media is inserted into the computer, but how do I add a new item to the list of choices?

I have written my own program that imports and processes digital photo files exactly the way that I want them to be handled. Next step is to get AutoPlay to launch the program automatically, but I can’t figure out how to add it to the AutoPlay list. IIRC, WinXP had a “browse” capability, but Vista doesn’t seem to offer that choice.

As far as I can tell, you’d have to edit the registry, see Preparing Hardware and Software for Use with AutoPlay, but it looks daunting!

Perhaps Microsoft will release a Windows Vista version of TweakUI at some time in the future – the Windows XP version lets you edit the AutoPlay list.

Yikes! That article is way beyond my comfort zone. I had searched the registry for “autoplay” before posting, but did not find anything that even vaguely resembled human-readable text.

Now that you mention it, I probably used TweakUI to edit the autoplay in XP. Here’s hoping that TweakUI makes an appearance for Vista.

As always, thanks for your great response.

I don’t have Windows Vista yet, but if I had, I wouldn’t want to venture into such esoteric registry editing either! yikes
