Add-Ins (2000 (9.0.2720))

Tools menu Add-ins is greyed out on my system. OS Win98.
Any suggestions how to turn it on?

Are add-ins disabled in other Office apps as well? If so, then it sounds like you may need to reinstall Office. Do your wizards and builders work?

Yes XL and Word both appear to be available.
In Access Builders work from time to time, but most times not.

All Access databases or just one or two? If all of them behave that way, you may need to do some repairing, and there are two methods to try, in the order I’d recommend.

1. Open Access, click on the Help menu, and select Detect and Repair. This has cured some bizarre wizard behavior for me in the past

2. If Detect and Repair doesn’t do it, insert your Office CD in the drive, open the Control Panel, select Office 2000 and click the Install/Remove button. One of the options you’ll be given is one to repair your installation. Try that and see if it makes a difference.

Both Excel and Word and Access all have Addins greyed out. Tried Access help repair and Office Repair both without success. Reluctant to attempt to delete Access completely and reinstall as I have several important Apps running under Access.

If the add-ins are grayed out in more than just Access, then it’s an Office problem and uninstalling Access isn’t going to fix it anyhow. You might want to post the question in the General Office Solutions forum and see if anyone else has experienced something similar. Stick a link in to this thread so you don’t have to repeat yourself.

Have you tried doing a repair or reinstall of Office itself? If you go to the Control Panel and click on Add/Remove Programs, then click on the Install/Remove button, Office 2000 will offer you the option of doing a reinstall or a repair instead of just removing it. I’ve found that the repair from the control panel cleans up some stuff that the application based detect and repair may miss, but I’d suggest a reinstall in this case. Something else installed on your machine may have stepped on one of your libraries, and you can’t blame Microsoft for that.

Repairing or reinstalling Access will not delete the database files you have created (the “Apps running under Access” that you refer to). But to be safe always backup important files before attempting anything major to your computer. If you’re going to reinstall Microsoft Office, and you’re worried about files that you have created; you can backup any letters (.doc), spreadsheets (.xls), and Access databases (*.mdb, and maybe *.mde), and any other files that you have created, just so you’ll feel a little better about the reinstallation. If you already regularly backup these type of files, then go ahead and try what Charlotte has suggested.

Thanks, It wasn’t the danger of deleting data so much as not getting it to run even as well as it does at present that has me worried. MS apps less and less like having earlier versions on the machine at the same time. I don’t use add ins a lot but its a nuisance when you see a useful one and want to try it out.

I haven’t had any problems with earlier versions on the same machine. There are some things you have to watch out for, of course, like creating separate directories for each version, but that’s simply common sense.
