Is version 11 now stable? I have version 10, is there any advantage in the upgrade?

Well obviously Acronis thinks it’s stable – build 8053 has been there since November! In all honesty, I don’t know if even I would call it unstable. A couple of us here in The Lounge have “jumped ship” because of very specific and critical problems of failure. However, I don’t know how much in the minority we are, if at all.

Been using Version 11 since it was in Beta. I have not had any particular problems with it all. As Al said there may be specific hardware related configurations that could be affected but it certainly hasn’t been on my configuration.
I have been and will remain a solid devotee to Acronis True Image, Disk Director and any other of their product line.

Just sitting back and waiting for someone to finally give a clearance to using a piece of software doesn’t prove a thing until each user gives it a try on THEIR system. Then you can determine if it’s a “GO” or not.
Each upgrade has at least a few new advantages to it, else why would there be an upgrade? Not just to make more money, of course! innocent

      Hi Ed,

I posted a thread post 670726 highlighting major problems I was having in my environment. Backing up is fine… restoring with the bootable CD is the problem.

As of this writing, the current v11.8053, has not resolved my issues. As bigaldoc stated, a few of us have switched, including myself. However, as viking33 as indicated, he has not had any of the issues. I can strongly second his comment that you should test it out in your environment before committing.

If your environment is similar to mine, and you do have a second physical hard drive that you can use for testing, then give it a whirl. If you experience like problems that I’ve encountered, then hold off upgrading.

      Cheers, Bob

I’m running Acronis True Image Home, version 10 and thinking about updating to 11. After reading the previous posts I’m re-thinking the purchase.

For all those who “jumped ship” what other product is suggested?

        Gloria

        • #1108763

If you’re running Version 10 happily and successfully and don’t feel like spending more money on a different product, I’d keep on going with TI.

On the other hand, you might want to read this thread ( post 703,034 ) which has links to two earlier threads that will tell you where a few of us have gone…

Me thinks Shadow Protect might be a little complicated for yours truly. I’ll continue with the one currently being used until something better comes along.

            Thanks anyway.

        • #1108765

I’m still running version 7 and have never felt the need to upgrade. It does all I want or need it to do and has NEVER given me a problem.

IMHO upgrading just because the vendor creates and offers one up seems silly unless there is some GREAT new improvement or a problem with the version you are using.

            Hi Doc,
Version 10 was the one on the download link when I installed it from the web. I always thought that version updates generally made improvements to the previous one. Some extensive, some not so. I have know updated versions to not work as well as the previous one, so to make an intelligent comparison, some users get the update and if problems arise, revert back.Is this not so?

If version 10 was the current version when you downloaded it then you had no choice but to start with that version. Version7 was the version I started with and the “improvements” in the upgrades have not impressed me enough to spend the money to move up. As I said, version 7 does all I need it to do and does it flawlessly.

As for “to make an intelligent comparison, some users get the update and if problems arise, revert back.” I’d say “Ask Bob.” grin Unless you have an image backup made right before you install the upgrade (something I always do before any upgrade of a major component of my system) it is often not very easy to revert back. I have better things to do with my time than spend hours on the phone with tech support trying to make an upgrade to something that worked fine before, work again. disappointed Sometimes, the latest is not always the greatest. But to each their own. smile

            • #1108843

Since I have to spend more money to upgrade to version 11, I’ve chosen not to go that direction. Too many users are not happy with the update. Therefore I will either keep using version 10 or change programs all together.

I’m aware that all updates are not the best decision to make, but how do you know that it’s not as good as the previous one unless you try it and see?

            • #1108850

It all depends on whether you want to be a leading edge (or is that “bleeding”?) or lay back user! On some software like True Image, I have always been leading edge and upgraded every time they put out a new version, partly because the upgrade price has always seemed fair to me. But, on other software, such as Windows Vista, I’m a lay back in the weeds user and let (thousands) of others try it out before I jump in and get wet. Your call…

Often, as Doc implies, the version to version “improvements” are a lot of smoke and mirrors about stuff that the average user never sees. But if they’re one of your favorite vendors, like I love MailWasher, I would jump to every version produced, regardless of whether I think there’s something there I really need.

            • #1109011

I may get the update later, but for now I’ll stay where I am. I use Mail Washer too, and update every time one’s available. There are a few programs that I won’t do without and install every update, but these are few and far between.

            • #1108857

              >I’m aware that all updates are not the best decision to make, but how do you know that it’s not as good as the previous one unless you try it and see?

If it ain’t broke… don’t fix it. doctor

            • #1109012

After working with you guys, I’ve adopted that as my motto. But, I still get every update for some of my favorite programs, not all mind you, just some.

            • #1109050

Actually, there are very few people who are having problems with TI v. 11. IF <—-= you are basing your opinion on posts found on the TI support board then your conclusion is faulty since one must expect that only those having problems will post there. The same can be said for ALL software in that case. I am running Vista Ultimate and TI v. 11 has worked flawlessly from the day it was installed. (I've been running True Image since v. 6)

But, as BigAl wrote, if the improvements and/of fixes in version 11 aren't important to you or don't apply, then there is no sense upgrading. Personally, I have found the new Scheduling feature to be worth the price of the upgrade.

Hey, it's your PC and your $$$……. only you can make the decision to upgrade or not. grin

              Hi Jeff,

I am one of those that had a problem with TI 11. I am also running Vista Ultimate. My question to you… have you tried a selective file or folder restore using the bootable CD? Specifically with picture files or PDF files that might have ADS attachments? This was the problem area for me that created corrupt files when performing restores. Everything looks to be fine until you try to access the files. The other factor involved is that my hard drives are SATA. The Linux bootable CD does not include the appropriate drivers for the SATA drives and that added to the woes.

Acronis did admit that there was a problem with the Linux SATA drivers and TI v11 would create corrupt files that had ADS attachments when attempting a restore from the bootable CD. Todate, no resolution to this issue has been provided by Acronis.

              Cheers, Bob

            • #1109185

              Bob,

I extend my commiserations to you in regard to your particular problem. To be honest, I have had virtually no problems with True Image since version 6.0 through the current version 11; albeit with v. 6 there was one small issue which was quickly remedied by Acronis AND to express their good will they even through in a free full copy of “Drive Cleanser” at that time. As to your particular problem, I run 3 SATA drives (2 internal and 1 external) and have no problems whatsoever with them via Windows nor the Boot Disk. They are identical WD 250 drives. I have been able to copy over files from any/all of the backup images (Full or Incremental) without issue. However, I don’t have anything with an ADS attachment. In fact, I don’t have a clue what they are. stupidme.

Perhaps Acronis will eventually get these bugs resolved OR if you are extremely dependent upon retrieving such files and only via the Boot Disk, then it might be worth considering another backup program, e.g., Starcraft’s ShadowProtect which several here on the board, including BigAl, have found more than acceptable for their needs.

            • #1109449

              Jeff,

I run with three WD500 SATA drives. Currently all internal and formatted with Vista’s version of NTFS.

The prime drive has three logical partitions, System, Data and AudioVideo. The System partition was built with a clean install of Vista Ultimate. The Data and AV units were created by restoring backups of other drives created under Windows XP (NTFS formatted). The second and third physical drives are used for backups only.

The System and Data logical drives both contain Alternate Data Stream files (ADS). All the ADS files are of the non-spyware / malware category.

Here’s a link to get a white paper that describes the role ADS plays in an environment.

If you are interested, here’s a link to get a current version of ADS SPY v1.11 that is referenced in the above mentioned white paper. I have used it to scan my system and it was useful to determine that the ADS files on my system are of the non intrusive variety.

By using ADS SPY, I was able to identify all the JPG and PDF files that had ADS attachments (non-intrusive). It was those files that became corrupt in a restore situation using the Linux bootable CD. ADS SPY also found many ADS attachments on the System drive… but again, id’d as non-intrusive.

Viking33 had started a post on ADS SPY awhile back that can be found here: post 690810

Hope this helps explain the concept of Alternate Data Streams and how they may be present in your environment.

              Cheers, Bob

And just so there’s another voice, I had trouble with v. 11 not wanting to run my nightly selected file backups which version 10 did just fine. It would either fail, hang or just not run at all with no indication why. I waited for one decimal release and when that didn’t fix it, I jumped ship. I think they’ve had more than enough time. It may very well be MY hardware/software combination but I didn’t want to fiddle around any more.

            • #1109182

              Al,

Remember the ShadowProtect thread which was quickly locked due to my having myriad and major issues with that program? Contrary to the lambasting I received for posting my problems you will NOT get such a response from me. My experience with True Image since version 6.0 has been stellar. And yes, there are those like yourself and Bob who have had problems, which is not atypical of any software. It’s just unfortunate you guys are two of the few in comparison to the majority. The cause is, of course, for Acronis to determine. Perhaps I have a “good” hardware combination and I must say that it should be since I built this rig using what I determined to be nicely matched parts not based upon popular vote. RollEyes

I wish I had a solution for you but I don’t and actually it wouldn’t matter since you have changed backup programs already.

              Peace.

            • #1109198

I’m aware that people don’t generally comment about things performing well, it’s only when things don’t perform as expected, that they do.I’m just trying to avoid problems with an updated version when the current one is performing correctly. As far as I can tell, the update doesn’t contain much in the way of performance that changes the current one for the better.

Therefore, I will stay with what I have until a version is updated that makes the new one imperative that it be installed.

              Thank you for your comments.

          Hi Gloria,

If True Image 10 is working for you then I would highly recommend staying the course.

I upgraded from 10 (which was working flawlessly in my environment) to 11 and regretted spending the money. I wasted close to 200 hours dealing with Acronis trying to resolve the issues. I eventually got a refund from Acronis and chose to switch to another backup application.

It should be noted that there are others who upgraded to 11 without experiencing a like adverse reaction. If you are deadset on updating, get a trial copy and test it out in your environment before committing.

          Cheers, Bob

            Hello Bob,

So far, no trouble with version 10 and I’ll take your recommendation to stay the course. I learned, a long time ago, to profit from other users experiences to save myself some hard knocks. Ask other poster, if this is not so. With my luck, I would join you and get more hard knocks.

I am happily able to verify that an Acronis TI 11 boot disc is a lifesaver. This morning my Vista Ultimate PC refused to boot, notifying me of a missing system file (possibly as a result of my several failed attempts to install SP1 yesterday).
I had just got around to creating a boot disc yesterday, and had made an image on an external drive, prior to attempting the SP1 upgrade.
Armed with the boot disc I was able to fully restore the whole C drive and have lost only a small number of emails received after I had made the image.
Have now set TI to create a daily incremental backup, and will see whether this will run properly tonight. One nasty scare is more than enough!

Check out post 711,188 for a possible solution to installing SP-1.

              Thanks Joe.
I did read and print out the instructions yesterday, but am waiting for some quiet time (?) and a lot of courage.
Happy to report that the scheduled TI backup did happen.

Something conspicuously absent from the discussion of newer versions in general and Acronis 11 in particular is that I think it was developed specifically to be compatible with Vista. If you aren’t running Vista then you don’t need it, and, as it has turned out, version 10 runs perfectly well with my hardware, at least, under Vista. The other variable is newer hardware, as was pointed out in the thread. If you haven’t changed your O/S and you haven’t changed your hardware, then you should be fine. If a new version has bells and whistles that you fancy then you may decide to switch.
