Jeff,
I’m not sure if this is real or not. I know nothing of this ComputerActive.com.uk and it MAY be a pirate? Of course Version 7.0 is quite old and the latest Version is 9.0 with V10 in beta now.

I would be suspicious of it.
I went to the Acronis site and didn’t see ANY mention of free version 7.0 being offered by them or any of their sales partners or of them supplying free registration numbers.

I have dropped a note asking Acronis about this offer and I will post back with their response. Meanwhile, I wouldn’t fill out any of the “registration” information asked for in that link. That’s the way phishing sites get their info. alien

• #1031920

If you follow the link on that site to http://www.acronis.com/mag/vnu-ati7%5B/url%5D then you do indeed get to a page on the Acronis web site that allows you to register for a free registration for True Image7, it looks like it was sent out as a cover CD on a computer mag.

If you’re going to fill in this form then I recommend reading the Privacy Statement, the information you give them will be used for marketing, and they provide a URL for opting out.

Stuart,
I’ll still wait to hear from Acronis on that.
This is for Jeff’s and others information only. I have V9.0 myself and working on beta 10.

If it is legit, then it would be a good way to try True Image, even if very outdated. Kind of like getting a free Windows 95 CD ( but then again you could download a trial 30 day Version 9.0 and check out the latest and greatest )

• #1032529

Bob, dont want to appear rude by not replying but got called away last friday -> today….of course you are right to advise caution but it is a legit magazine part of the Vunet group. They often offer these free links to software probably as a cheaper way than actually fixing a cd to the magazine cover. This week they are offering McAfee Spam Killer 2005, but as you so rightly point out it is probably easier to get a 30 day free trial on any of these progs as a try out before buying with the advantage of all the up to date features.

• #1032562

Jeff,
No sooner had I received your post, than the Acronis support people answered my query. They did indeed confirm that the offer is legit and was sent as a “promo”.

I guess I can get a little leery sometimes about some of these “offers” but this seems OK, even if it is Version 7.

( get the 30 trial version of 9.0 )

Thought this might be of interest to you, it seems they were a victim of their own success and myself and various others have’nt helped blush hushmouth

As an important Computeractive reader, you recently requested information
about how to download and register (obtain a serial code) for the full
version of Acronis True Image 7.

The information you require is below, after a really important statement:

The Computeractive free downloads are only for Computeractive readers,
please do not give out the download information to anyone who does not read
the magazine. We tell our software suppliers that only our readers are
downloading their software and the software isn’t supposed to be available
to the general public.

However, with the Acronis True Image 7 promotion, this is exactly what
happened. The promotion leaked to the general Internet public and other
websites started promoting the download. Result? Our server was absolutely
inundated with download requests and Acronis were overwhelmed with
registration requests. They quickly noted that the requests were from users
all over the world and weren’t Computeractive readers.

Our contract with Acronis is to offer the free commercial download to
Computeractive readers and Acronis wanted to suspend the download offer when
it was clear it was being downloaded by the general public. We came to an
agreement to offer the download to our genuine readers who contact us
requesting further information – that way it’s easy to determine that the
request is from a reader.

If we experience further problems with the free downloads in the future, we
are likely to stop offer the service.

You can download this software from this link:

Please keep this information to yourself. If you have problems with this
link in Internet Explorer, copy and paste the link within Mozilla Firefox to
download.

You also need to obtain a serial code from Acronis:

Note that neither Computeractive nor Acronis can offer technical support for
a free download.

• #1034152

Jeff,
Thanks for the additional info.
I did get the impression from Acronis that they were reluctantly still giving out limited reg numbers for that Version 7 offer.
I think the only possible good thing about getting the older version registered, is that it may give you the opportunity to upgrade to the newest version at a discounted price. Maybe!
Anyway, hang in there. Version 10 should be out shortly. Worth the wait.

Bob,

Actually, it was released yesterday. There was an announcement of the release of TI 10 on the True Image support forum yesterday here: True Image 10 released.

And, Yes it works just fine with Vista RC2.
I have installed trial Version 10 and have run a full image of the Vista partition from within Vista. This is the first Vista ready program I have installed that works out of the “box”.

Hi Bob

I wonder if you can answer this for me?

I am looking at True Image for use at work, so paying a licence isn’t a problem. wink Seriously, though, I want to set up a PC which will automatically re-image the HDD when it is restarted.

What I would like to know is if this is a feature in the single licence version. The only answer I have been able to get to date is that it is available in the Enterprise version.

TIA.

• #1035438

True Image 10 is alleged to have a scheduling option to backup when computer starts.
Do not know wheter this is include in TI 9, as I never schedule tasks, only run them manually.

In any case, It would be better to backup before a shutdown, sinc eyou would lose files if for some reason the reboot failed and you had to restore drives.
TI 10 has options to backup at logon, logoff, shutdown and reboot.

P.S. Just checked TI 9 seems to have the same options.

• #1035447

I am considering upgrading from my very old DriveImage 7 to Acronis TrueImage 10, but still need to check a few details.

Does TrueImage also include the ability to back up according to a schedule (e.g. 02:00 every morning).

StuartR

• #1035453

Yes Stuart, I have my system scheduled to do an increment backup every weeknight at 6:00 pm (whilest I watch our local news). Takes less than 2 minutes for an increment – while it takes roughly 1 hour to do a full backup on the weekends.

• #1035614

yes.

download the ti 10 user guide to check details.

• #1035456

This thread seems to have morphed into discussions about THREE or more versions of TrueImage, so I don’t know which version you had in mind when you asked your question, Granville. I don’t schedule backup imaging, either with TI or elsewhere so I don’t know if it could be done at boot time or not. But I wanted to get another reminder in here that there is a fine, free scripting program available that probably would do the job: AutoIt v3 – Automate and Script Windows Tasks – For Free!

• #1035538

Granville,
A quick look through the manual & Help sections of V 10 has come up with this:
———————————————————-
Daily Execution Parameters

If you selected the daily execution, you will have to specify some additional parameters:

• #1035548

> Also, to Stuart…does this do it for you also?

I’m not completely sure yet. My current setup has:

• a daily backup, on Weekdays and Sundays only, keeping the last 6 backups
• a weekly backup, every Saturday night, keeping the last 3 backups
• a monthly backup, on the first of every month, keeping the last 2 backups
I’m prepared to accept reasonable loss of functionality in this area as it sounds much better at other things.
How close can TrueImage 10 get to this?

StuartR

• #1035550

Stuart,
I think it can do these things for you, although I’m not sure about the retention and deletion of older Images as you pose.
You may have to manually delete the older back ups but again, not sure of it.

To be sure, I would send these same parameters to Acronis support to see about getting a more definitive answer.

Thanks,

It looks like I can do what I want by using a separate backup location for each schedule, and just to help me decide I received an email from Acronis today with a $10 discount off the $49.99 price.

Good Show Stuart.
I’m sure when you start to use it you will join the ranks of TI supporters.

• #1036175

OK, so I’m impressed.

Some of the differences between TrueImage 10 and the DriveImage 7 I was using are:

• I can backup whilst booted from the CD, making it very easy to backup all the laptops in the house without having to install software on them
• The CD boots much more quickly and has much better network support
• It is 3 to 5 times quicker to do a full image backup to both local and network disks. A single backup manages to use 35% to 50% of the 100MB NIC bandwidth on the Server
• It is also about 3 to 5 times quicker to restore an image backup
• It can do differential backups, enabling me to keep many more older backup versions on the same size media, this also reduces the backup time for my regular scheduled backups
There are probably others, but that’s enough for me to be glad I spent the money.

• #1036179

Stuart,
And to top it off, I had it email me when it was done making the Image.
True, I did it just for kicks but it does have that capability.

Quality stuff!

• #1036207

Bob,

I always configured DriveImage to send me an email on successful completion, that way I get to see when it silently stops running for any reason, so I didn’t list this as a “difference”

StuartR

• #1036275

Stuart,
It was more of a “difference” to me since I never saw the need to send myself or anyone an email saying it was done Imaging. I don’t do unattended imaging. compute

• #1035615

I do not recall whether TI has the ability to retain the last N backups, as I always run tasks manually, never schedule tasks.

In any case, download the TI 10 user guide and check the section on scheduling.

• #1067117

If anybody still has the original download of this, could you please tell me the filename? I know I have it somewhere, but all attempts at guessing a partial filename have turned up zilch.

Alan

• #1067118

Sorry, original long gone, Alan. Best I could do was visit my account page at Acronis and start a fake download to see what the filename is that it proposes. I’ve doctored the attachment to wipe out my SN.

• #1067178

Thanks Al. That helped, in as much as I’m now convinced that I burned it to CD then gave it to somebody else! stupidme
I might grab the new v10 anyway.

Alan

• #1067192

The new version 10 is exponentially better than the old version 7, IMHO. I’ve been using True Image since version 6 and it has steadily improved with each new release. It has served me well over years and I find it indispensible. The Auto Scheduler, in and of itself, in v. 10 is worth every penny.

Jeff

• #1067297

Thanks Jeff. I remember setting up a scheduler (incremental backup I think) in v7. Is v10 significantly different to that?
yep Not only is the setup much different, e.g., you have to first designate a “Backup Location”, max # of files, how long you want to keep them, etc., but the options and features for Scheduled backups is much more robust. My particular setup creates a backup weekly: 1 Full and then 3 Incrementals, then it repeats. I have it configured to send me an e-mail to notify me if the backup operation was successful, failed or needs my input. I’ve had it running like this for months and I haven’t had to open the program in all that time in regard to backups. I also find that v. 10.4942 is significantly faster than previous versions. A full backup of my Vista system (24 gigs) takes about 5 1/2 minutes on my system. An Incremental backup varies of course, but typically it takes about 2 – 2 1/2 minutes to complete. No complaints here. wink
