I’m hoping that one or more of our compatriots who use Acronis True Image will also have some experience with their Acronis Disk Director software. I’m in the mood for completely cutting myself loose from PowerQuest, including Partition Magic. Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of drive realignment using Partition Magic and although I’ve managed to get my work done, it has not been without “errors” and some working around on problems. I’ve just downloaded a trial copy of Acronis’ product and I would like to know if anyone has anything to say about it. The advertised price is $50 US bucks, but I got an email from them about a month ago offering what seemed to be a ten dollar discount. I’ve emailed their Sales folks to see if I can still get that price.

AskWoody LoungerJuly 26, 2004 at 3:17 pm #855872Hi Al,
I’ve been using True Image for some time now. Started with Ver 6 and upgraded to current Ver 7. The prog is very easy and intuitive to use. The GUI is straight forward and will lead you right along to do various tasks, creating an image, restoring, cloning a disk, restoring a single file, task scheduling and more.Acronis has excellent tech support with people who know their product. At one time they were offering a half price discount to Drive Image users. Don’t know if that still exists.
I was beta testing their Partition Manager portion of that Suite, before they merged it into one suite of utilities. It also seemed to be a great program and just as easy to use as True Image.
You can guess that I cut the strings from PowerQuest. Didn’t regret it a bit. Give it a shot Al.

AskWoody LoungerJuly 27, 2004 at 1:13 pm #856284Hi BigAl,
I too am also interested in Acronis’ Disk Director so I will keep an eye on this thread for any feedback.
I just bought True Image (v7.0) last month… based on my reading of your findings, recommendation and notes… excellent product. Only one problem, when I visited Acronis’ site moments ago, I found that True Image has now been upgraded to version 8 with some nice additional features. I have fired off a note to their support group looking for a “free” upgrade.
Cheers, Bob

Just got the clearance to DL and install version 8 as a freebie upgrade from Version 7, along with a new serial number. Just another instance of how those people will respond to reasonable requests.
Don’t see why you won’t get the same with your request to upgrade, since you purchased 7 recently.

AskWoody LoungerJuly 28, 2004 at 7:50 pm #857008No, actually after I saw this thread about Version 8 and you trying to contact them regarding an upgrade, I sent off an email to Acronis support and very politely asked about a no charge upgrade. I only purchased version 7 a couple of months ( 5 ) ago. I DID include my serial number of version 7 as proof that I really did buy it.
Within an hour or so, there was my new serial number and a link to download version 8. I did so, and the upgrade is up and running great.I think this another example of you won’t get if you don’t ask for it, but also a good example of how willing they are to please their customers.

AskWoody LoungerJuly 28, 2004 at 7:52 pm #857010I see that Bob is online and is probably preparing an answer as I type. But, for what it’s worth, I first purchased Version 6 just before 7 came out and I had to send them a note asking about the upgrade. Their answer was quick as a bunny that I was entitled to a free upgrade, with a download link. In my case now, I did get an email today, offering me Version 8 for a $30 (US) upgrade price. I don’t think there’s enough in the new version to warrant this, but I’ll give ’em the $30 bucks just to stay current and see what happens. (Some of the things that they show as “new” are not a concern to me, since, for example, I already have my “swap” file in a separate partition that I don’t backup.)

AskWoody LoungerJuly 29, 2004 at 12:27 pm #857277Hi Bob,
Has been 48 hours since the original request for a free upgrade was sent to support and I have not heard from them yet… other than the fact they did acknowledge receipt of my e-mail and asked me to download their Report Manager to take a snapshot of the environment to assist them in solving “my problem”. Obviously a standard auto e-mail response and not one generated by a human. In the original e-mail I did provide them with a copy of my order and registration data, including the serial number.
This morning’s mail run brought a general ad from them stating v8.0 was available for US$29.99 and they throw in Disk Cleaner v6.0 as a freebie. However, that was a mass mailing. So, I’ll hang in there for another day or two. They are probably swamped for free upgrades.
Cheers, Bob

AskWoody LoungerJuly 30, 2004 at 12:53 pm #857757Boy, I don’t know what’s going on at Acronis. Maybe they are swamped and just don’t have time to answer emails. As I said in my first post, I’m in the midst of a trial run of their Disk Director software and I sent them a note on July 25 asking if I could still get the special price they offered 30 days ago. They have not responded to that email.
TWO days ago, I got an email from THEM advertising the special $29.99 price for True Image 8.0 and JUST NOW another email came in where that price has been changed to $39.99
I’m not too sure they’ve got a hand on their own business helm this week. We’ll see…..
Edited to add: I just sent them another email, attempting to summarize what I said here. I’ll post back if I ever get an answer.

AskWoody LoungerJuly 31, 2004 at 8:44 pm #858191One little side note on why I’m concerned. As I said earlier, I downloaded the two-week trial copy of Disk Director 9.0 and of course, would like to buy it at the “best” price I can get from them, so these confusing emails have bothered me a bit. You fellas may know this already, but on the trial version of Disk Director you CAN’T “commit” (finalize) any changes you make to a partition, so the trial software is really pretty useless, except to determine ease of use and evaluate the GUI, etc. I’m very satisfied with those things, but in light of “another thread” that I know you know about, I was trying to check out how long it would take to make some changes to a disk, but obviously I can’t do that.
As I think we’ve all concluded, I guess they’re pretty busy and I don’t blame them for not working on the weekend like we do
so I’ll just keep waiting to see what they say. One thing is fer sure, I’m GONNA cut myself loose from Partition Magic, the former POWERQUEST product!

AskWoody LoungerAugust 3, 2004 at 11:58 am #859146Just a followup in light of Deb’s concern in this thread. I’ve sent yesterday, a THIRD email to Acronis with my questions. The first two (July 25 and July 30) were sent to sales@acronis.com so this time I tried sending to info@acronis.com but still no answer as of now. Since my experience in past months has been pretty favorable, there must be something amiss with those folks. More later…

AskWoody LoungerAugust 3, 2004 at 3:51 pm #859305Al,
Seems strange. Acronis usually acknowledges the receipt of your email and assigns a case number to it. This will allow you to follow up on a particular inquiry, usually with the same support person. At the bottom of my last message from them was:
Note: for Technical support contact us at support@acronis.com.
For guaranty 48 hours response from support requests, please,
pick in e-mail serial number of yours Acronis True Image Version.Slightly fractured English but very responsive in my experience.

AskWoody LoungerAugust 4, 2004 at 7:31 pm #860093I’ll chime in here again and relate my own experience with Acronis as of late. I upgraded to True Image 8.0 as I really like the product and assume this is where they are going to focus their energy in the coming months ahead. As might be expected, my purchase with their followup e-mail with the download link, s/n, etc., came well within the time frame stated. However, I noticed that there was no link for “Disk Cleaner”, the additional program which was supposed to be included if you upgraded to True Image 8.0 (see their “Summer Special”). So, I e-mailed them, using the “support@acronis com” address on July 28th and asked about this missing program. I got a response back yesterday with the link and s/n for Disk Cleaner. My guess about the long delay is due to the mass of e-mail they must be receiving after the upgrade announcement. In the past, Acronis has been stellar in both speed and quality of support. Perhaps it is going to take a bit longer from now on to get a response back from them due to their increased popularity.

AskWoody LoungerAugust 5, 2004 at 10:25 am #860303You and Bob are probably on to something with the support email address. My first two emails went to “sales” because that’s the source of the advertising emails they send. When I got no response to either, I sent my third to “info” on the premise that sales WAS more than likely swamped. As of this moment, I still have no response from Acronis. For my part, I have no reason to be in a hurry, it’s just that I was trying to take advantage of the $30 prices for BOTH the TI upgrade and the Disk Director suite. Maybe I should write to “support” (and include my TI serial number

AskWoody LoungerAugust 5, 2004 at 1:37 pm #860406Al,
After reading about the possibility of updating True Image to V8 for free just for asking (I’ve had mine since March 04), I wrote to the support department. I just received a confirming email today with the serial number of the update included. Needless to say, I have the software downloaded and installed already (…and I’m on dial-up!!) and it looks to be a winner.I have their “PartitionExpert” software from an earlier purchase, so I am set! I think they make terrific products.
So do try directing your request to the support desk!!
to both Bobs for sharing the updating information with us!!

Unfortunately they didn’t mention Disk Director 9 but after a couple more messages back and forth, I found an email this morning with a link to download it as well… As it turns out, as I write this post their site is not accessible so I’ll have to try again later. AskWoody LoungerJuly 29, 2004 at 11:33 pm #857641I received an e-mail from Acronis advising me I was entitled to an upgrade, my path was a freebie version 6, paid upgrade to version 7. The two weeks later this advice regarding a free upgrade and new registration number.
The new version is great, I have been trying to image my disks for weeks. Recent posts will confirm. I installed the new version imaged to my LaCie USB 2 160G. drive cleaned everything off the imaged drive, then booted off the created disk. Immediate recognition of the USB drive, restored the image and every program install on that drive is fine.
I would trust Acronis. From Australia because of time differences support is not great. This is the only company that have honoured the policy of advising me of upgrades. I started in computers back in the days of DOS 2 about 1985. Gee, that’s 20 years ago.
