Anyone have any experience using Live Mesh or something similar to synchronize a Back End in different sites. I am aware of the issue of making sure that you do not have simultaneous changes, but are there any other issues or tips anyone can share?
Thanks

AskWoody_MVPJanuary 25, 2009 at 9:09 pm #1144067The Live Mesh facility still seems to be in Beta from what I can tell, but it suggests that you can use .accdb and .mdb files. However I would be more than a little skeptical about doing so on a production database. The fly in the ointment here is that replication was removed from Access 2007 for .accdb format database, and there is anecdotal evidence that 2007 doesn’t work all that well with replicated .mdb databases. One thing you might consider is using SQL Server backends, but there are issues there as well as the SQL Server Express version cannot publish data, and in general must work with a Standard or Enterprise version of SQL Server to work in a replicated database. I can tell you that replication in SQL Server does work, and is pretty robust. We use it with several of our clients, and while it is complex, it does the job. We see syncronization with distant databases happening in a matter of seconds across the Internet.
If you are in a position to do some testing with the Live Mesh environment and Access database, I, and I’m sure many of the regular followers of this forum, would love to know about your experiences.

AskWoody_MVPFebruary 6, 2009 at 3:58 pm #1146030Well, in theory, on a website several people can simultaneously work with and Access database, whether is in the .mdb or the .accdb format. And the Live environment is effectively a website, so if the database is only accessed in one physical location, that should work. However if you have a copy on your PC, there is a copy on the Live website, and another person has a copy on his PC, then I don’t see how .accdb databases could be kept in sync. The .mdb format can do that, although it is complex and the resolution of conflicts is a real challenge.
