Was about to install paused Feb. 2024 Win10 22H2 updates.  Had a distraction and accidentally selected the “Download and install” choice for the 2024-02 Cumulative Update Preview…..(KB5034843) instead.  Haven’t rebooted laptop yet, so I think the update hasn’t fully completed yet.  Any way to bail out of the Preview update before shutting down laptop?  If not, what consequences can I expect and will the other pending Feb. 2024 updates install OK on laptop restart?

I’d go ahead and let it install, then follow these instructions from MS on how to uninstall it…

      https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/february-29-2024-kb5034843-os-build-19045-4123-preview-c576e1b5-9b0d-4411-9be8-57328f41954d

See the section “If you want to remove the LCU

I agree with OldNavyGuy above, in that you should let the machine reboot and allow the installer to finish the installation.

At that point, you can then proceed with the uninstallation routine described in the link in OldNavyGuy’s post (preferred) or you can try uninstalling the update from its entry in the list of installed updates in Control Panel.

IF you try uninstalling it from its entry in Control Panel, it might not uninstall the servicing stack update that is included with the preview update. The method at the link in OldNavyGuy’s post WILL uninstall the update and the servicing stack update as well.

You can not remove the servicing stack update after it is installed per the linked KB. You would have to restore the system from a backup image.

I’d just let it go and see if the system is OK. I’ve installed it and nothing untoward has happened.

Did you already have the Feb Patch Tuesday updates installed?

      The OP did not.

Well… Couldn’t get back to working on update problems until today.  Went ahead with reboot and Preview Cumulative Update (KB5034843) seemed to update successfully.  Decided to go ahead with downloading rest of Pending Feb 2024 updates and get back to normal use.

Guess that was the wrong move [should have tried uninstall of “Preview Update” first].  The MS Defender update completed OK, but the >NET Framework….update gave a download error (0x800800005) and later a similar Lenovo System update error and finally a general Windows Update “Error encountered” msg.

Unfortunately, its now time for some other family obligations and I have to leave the laptop problem until later [possibly tomorrow].  Any suggestions on where to start when I return to the problem?  Thanks for all the help.

If you didn’t create a backup of your system, or at the least, a System Restore point, I would follow the suggestion above to uninstall the Preview Update (with the link how to do it).

Thanks to all [OldNavyGuy, Bob99, joep517] who responded to my update problem!

I didn’t get a chance to get back online and work on my laptop update problem until this afternoon.  While getting ready to attempt an uninstall of that Cumulative Update Preview, I noticed that another of the Pending Feb 2024 routine MS updates had been installed since yesterday’s problems.  The Feb 2024 Lenovo System update and .NET Framework update were again pending download.  Thought I’d try to proceed with the update one more time before going to the uninstall.  All installed perfectly!  Windows Update shows:  “You’re up to date”.

Programs seem to be running normally, printing is working OK, no more error messages shown.  All seems normal.  Could that Cumulative Update Preview have needed and extra reboot after the error messages appeared to completely install??  Not sure why it all seems to have resolved successfully without more intervention, but I won’t complain.  At least I won’t have to get out the Macrium Reflect backup flashdrive image.

Thanks again for all the help.  I’m sure glad that the Ask Woody community is available as a resource for help with computing problems!
