Accessing someone else’s backup PST file

I can’t find the (probably very simple) answer to this, mainly because I don’t know the correct terminology!

Our Exchange Server 2003 has several users, each with their own Mailbox (no, not PST file!).

BackupAssist individual creates backup PST files from each mailbox on a daily basis, in a directory which isn’t known to Exchange, and which aren’t normally accessed

I want to ‘connect’ to one of these user’s (say User- PST files within a different user’s (say User-A) Outlook, so that it appears as a new Folder (with InBox, Sent, etc subfolders) in the usual Folder list view. I do not want to import the emails from User-B’s PST – InBox, Sent, etc folders – into the corresponding folders of User-A’s Outlook.

I hope this makes sense!

What is the correct terminology for this action? And, even better, has someone a quick procedure to enable it to happen?

In Outlook – File | Open | Outlook Data File – navigate to the location of the PST file. Then just Close the file when finished with it.

It is that simple as long as you have OS permission to access the file. No head hanging required…

I believe Microsoft views working with a PST on a remote drive as an unsupported configuration; it certainly is not recommended for normal use. However, to glance at some email now and then, or copy items back and forth, it should be “reliable enough.”

It’s basically so someone can temporarily access emails of someone who’s left, without having to keep the (ex-)user domain account hanging around!
