When I click on ‘Address book’ under either ‘Envelopes and Labels’ or ‘Letter Wizard’ in Word, I get the following error messages:

‘Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client.’ On clicking OK, this error appears:

‘Logon failed. You must log on to Microsoft Exchange to access your address book. Error code: “Unspecified error”.’

I only use MS Outlook, which definitely IS the default mail application (and default for contacts, etc), I only have one Outlook profile, I don’t use MS Exchange (am not on a network), my contacts folder is listed as the (only) Outlook address book (MAPI) in ‘Tools>Accounts>View or change existing directories or address books’ in Outlook, and when I click address book in Outlook it works perfectly. Does anyone have any ideas what has caused this, or what to do about it? It is a bit annoying, because it is impossible for me to access my contacts from Word (other than via the WOPR Popup Contacts list, which works perfectly – could this be the problem?).

    Thanks for any help!

I am no expert but look at MSKB KB228457 which talks of fixmapi.exe. It starts by talking about Internet Explorer but I know it has resolved some Outlook problems for me.
