A notebook has died so I have removed the hard drive & connected it as slave to my PC & copied to a DVD much of the data that was stored on it.

However one folder that is important cannot be copied. When it is accessed I get an error message:

[Drive]Documents and SettingsUsernameDesktop[Foldername] is not accessible.

I have not protected this folder or restricted access to it. Can anyone explain how I access it?

      Hi Malcolm

How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP from the MS knowledge base may help.

Thank you for the pointer to the MSKB article. With its guidance I was able to force a change of ownership to get access to the files in the previously inaccessible folders. But I could only see them in Safe Mode. They were still not accessible in a normal Windows environment.

At a guess & in Safe Mode I copied the folders to the Desktop, went back to normal Windows & found they were then accessible. Problem solved!

Thank you again for your help.
