• Access has to close (Access2003)

I’ve got this one database with a problem.

I think it is limited to one form. When I open the form in design mode, then make even a minor change (like move a control), and then try to close and save, I get an error something to the affect of “Access has encountered an error and has to close”. I can put the database over on another computer, and I have no problems. But if I move it back, same problem.

Both computers have Office2003 SP3. There appears to be a slight different in the builds/versions:
    The one that works: 11.8204.8221
    the other one: 11.8166.8221

But the Office Update site says I’m current.

On the computer that works, I even converted it back to Access2000, decompiled, then compacted/repaired. Brought it back over to the problem computer, and same problem.

Both computers running Windows XP Pro. The problem computer was just upgraded to SP3, but problem existed before that.

Anyone know what might cure this problem?

I don’t know whether it’ll help, but there are two post-SP3 hot fixes from Microsoft:

Access 2003 post-Service Pack 3 hotfix package: December 18, 2007 – this one is a must, it solves a number of common problems.
Access 2003 post-Service Pack 3 hotfix package: November 21, 2007 – worth a try too, although less essential.

Thanks Hans, it was the Dec. hotfix package that did it!

I must have applied that hotfix to my old laptop back in December, but when I got my new desktop I just brought it up-to-date from Office Update website, never even considering (or remembering) any hotfixes. And the website doesn’t mention whether or not there are hotfixes avaiable! Now I also know that the difference in the versions I observed was because of the hotfix (they are both the same now).

        Thanks again.

Do you apply the hotfix in the RUN box after you click start or just double click on msaccess.msp that comes with the download?

Double click the download and you will be asked where to extract the files to. Put them anywhere you like, as long as you can find them.

Then in the extracted files, double click the msp and it starts the update. Let it run.

            Thanks John.
I looked at the readme file and it said to peform it from Run, strange

Anyway i run the msp file from within windows and it woked fine.

I have a client that has Access 2003 SP3 but dont know if they have applied the hotfix.

Is there a way of finding out if it has been applied or not? They dont know.

The MSKB articles about the hotfixes list the version numbers and modification dates of the files that are affected by them, so you could inspect those.
You can see the version number of a file by hovering the mouse pointer over it in Windows Explorer. If that doesn’t work:
          – Right-click the file in Windows Explorer.
          – Select Properties from the popup menu.
          – Activate the Version tab.

I have done hat with msaccess.exe on my laptop and it is the same number as mentioned in the hotfix.

I’ll check this at the clients.

            Thanks Hans
