The full Error is “Cannot open a database created with a previous version of you application.” I am trying to link to an old .mdb file with Access 2010 and am getting this error. Anyone have a clue as to why?

How old is the mdb? I have just tried linking tables with Access 2010 from an mdb file that uses the 2000 format, and that worked OK.

And to add to John’s reply, I just linked to an Access 97 mdb file with Access 2007.

Another pertinent question – what is the format of your database where you are trying to establish the link? Is it an MDB file or is it an ACCDE file?

It is a .mdb file. The file was created with a front end program so I don’t know what version of Access is its native(?) format. I know that up to version 2002 I could just open the file but after that I had to link to it.

I’m wondering if it is corrupted. I think (anybody can chime in here and correct me) that any mdb file that you could open with Access 2002 you can open with 2010.

If the file is not too large and does not have any sensitive data, you could zip it and attach so some of us could take a look.

Here is a sample file that ships with the program.

This file is in Access 2.0 format, this is prior to Access 97.

I opened this file using Access 2003.

I can also link to it from another database.

I encounter the same error when trying to open or link to your file.

Here is a Microsoft Article about this error.

    • #1249079

With Access 2007, I was unable to open the Sample Access 2.0 .mdb file, but was able to link to the tables and edit it just fine. I would expect the same behavior with 2010, but don’t yet have that version.

    • #1249080

Were you able to open/link it with Access 2010? That is what I am having trouble with.

I tried using Access 2010 and could neither Open it, nor Link to it. I think you will have to try the solution suggested in the Microsoft Link I posted earlier.

Hi Anne, do you have to keep that database in the 2.0 format?

    • #1249099

Yes I do have to kkep the file in the 2.0 format. That is the format the program creates. I use Access to clean up the data.

        Anne

What program creates this Access 2.0 format?

Why not just convert that database into Access 2000 format, then link int it via Access 2010?

    • #1249101

It is a propriety real estate accounting software program called Investment Property Management.

Is this to be in real time or as an archive?
If archive, Why not just convert that database into Access 2000 format, then link into it via Access 2010?

How would I go about converting it? I can’t open it with Access 2010.

        Anne

I just created a blank Access 2000 format database, then imported all the tables to it.

You could then use the new database to link to from Acces 2010.

      Patt

I think the problem is that if you can’t open it in the first place, you also can’t import tables from it either.

But that’s the point John, i can open it using Access 2003, i cannot change anything of course.

And as i said, using Access 2003 i can create a new Access 2000 format database, then i can import all tables from the Access 2.0 database.

Butt AWOLD can’t open it, so she can’t import from it either.

      Anne,

The problem may be due to a missing registry key. MS offers a solution that -may- work for Access 2.0 at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310937 :

Cannot open or convert an Access 97 or Access 2000 database in Access 2002, in Access 2003, or in Access 2007

The solution involves editing the registry – back it up (export) first. Good luck! — Evelyn

I tried the solution suggested by Evelyn Stevens. It didn’t work. Any more suggestions?

I have already converted that database into Access 2000 format using Access 2003. Why isn’t this a way to go?

She currently has only Access 2010 and that was only a sample database you converted. She can’t import from the Access 2 database into the 2000 database using Access 2010.

I think I have that right, but …

    • #1250813

If it were me having this problem, I’d either get one myself or find someone with an older version of Access and convert the mdb file to 2000 or later. Then use that version to link to.

    • #1251326

Larry that is correct. I only have Access 2010. I have had my software stolen so I no longer have the disks for earlier versions of Access.
