    Hi all:

I just moved myself from an old W2K box to a new XP box, but I’m still running Office 2000. Everything seems to be working just the way it used to except for my ability to open attachments. I get an “Access Denied” message when attempting to open email attachments. I’m running as an admin user, so I can’t explain this lack of permission.

When you launch an attachment by double-clicking, it is saved to a sub-folder of the IE cache (Temporary Internet Files). If you can successfully access the same attachment by first saving it to a normal folder (e.g., right-click, Save As…, into My Documents), then there seems to be some kind of problem with Outlook’s use of its cache folders. Not sure what the solution is, though.

Second possibility: attachment is viral and when it is saved to disk your antivirus program is deleting or quarantining it, leading Outlook to give an error because the file is missing. If you save the file somewhere else on disk, please scan it before opening!
