Has anyone had any experience using Access (any version) with Vista? I do some work for a software house that got the following e-mail from one of its clients:

I just got through reading an article in a developers forum on how Windows Vista will no longer support access because vista will be using SQL due to security issues due to access. If this is the case are there any plans to come up with a SQL version/front end for MTS? Hiring a SQL administrator is Not in any budgets……It is being said that service pack 1 for vista when it comes out, access will not be compatible with vista which will not support odbc drivers or jet which is needed for access.

[/indent] Now, I know this is just some stupid rumor, or at best some misinterpretation of some minor situation. However, on the off-chance there might be some minor compatibility issues that we need to be aware of (probably unrelated to this rumor), I just wanted to know what experiences anyone here might have had.

I haven’t used either Windows Vista or Office 2007, but…

Microsoft has released Access 2007 at roughly the same time as Windows Vista. It is the most significant update in years, confirming Microsoft’s commitment to Access. As far as I know, there *have been* plans of abandoning Access earlier on, around the turn of the century, but more recently Microsoft has returned to the Jet Engine and DAO as the platform of preference for smaller databases. I don’t believe they’ll dump Access in Vista SP1.

I knew that to be the case also. I didn’t believe that Access was being dumped, but as is often the case, these rumors start from some little seed and get blown out of proportion. And I just didn’t want to dismiss this without finding out if ANYONE knew ANYTHING that might have gotten miscontrued. I figure if the people here haven’t seen it, it ain’t there!

There has been a shift in emphasis in Access, and that has started or resurrected a lot of rumors. Access is being positioned as a front end to SQL Server or as a standalone desktop app for power users. The user security is being removed in 2007, so for multiuser applications SQL Server Express or full SS will be necessary if you need to restrict user authorizations. They’re giving away the developer tools free, but the loss of user security means you either roll your own security or rely on SQL Server.

Oh, and it has nothing to do with Vista particularly. The same thing applies if you install Access 2007 on Windows XP.

Are you referring to Access user-level security? Many of my apps rely on it, help.

Access 2007 still supports user-level security in databases in Access 2000 and Access 2002/2003 format (i.e. .mdb and .mde databases), and the security tools such as the User-level Security Wizard are still available.
However, the new native Access 2007 file format (.accdb) doesn’t have user-level security. If you convert an existing database to Access 2007 format, all user-level security will be removed.
